Better Reception ????

Only one local Gateway made a recent change to their antenna system and now I am getting picked up almost 100% by two of the other Digipeaters and Gateways.  The gateway raised the antenna by a lot and now reports a range of 65+ miles.  The other Digipeaters and getways only claim a range of 20 miles and the antennas are only 30 feet AGL.

Before the change, I would only get picked up about 25% of the time by the Gateway station and not get picked up by any of the other stations.

What is the radio theory explanation for this?

A likely explanation is the the iGate that had its antenna raised is also acting as a digipeater.  The other digipeaters in the area are then simply retransmitting the packets from the iGate/digipeater.

If there is a lot of APRS traffic in your area, this is an unfortunate circumstance since the available bandwidth is greatly reduced by the multiple digipeats of a single packet.

Interesting........

Based on the map of where my packets go, that does not sound correct.  But I am still learning how this all works.

The map does not show them being forwarded to the iGate.
