I am a new Ham and considering attending the Hamvention next year.  How long should I plan on staying?  Is this only exhibitors or are there forums and such that one can attend?  I wanted to take my own plane into the local airport and do tent camping but it does not look any is available.  True?

You can download the 2019 program here:

It is definitely for everybody, with a large number of forums.  As to how long to stay, Friday and Saturday are the prime days, and most of the evening activities are on those days as well.

Years ago, I flew a Bonanza into DAY and rented a car at the FBO.  No idea if there is anything nearby the new venue.

Prepare to be overwhelmed!!!  I was the first year I attended.  I would plan on Friday and Saturday for Hamvention. Initially, just do a 'walk about' between the buildings/flea market to spot dealers/exhibits that capture your interest.  By Sunday, the flea market is empty and many of the commercial dealers have packed it in.

Consider attending Contest University on Thursday.  It's a great opportunity to meet the 'Big Guns' in contesting.  Even if you aren't into contesting, the technical info and operating techniques/practices presented are well worth the trip.

I would make lodging arrangements now!  Lots of motels/hotels along I-75 between Miamisburg and North Dayton.

Amazing what happens when there is no rain, isn't it?

are you suggesting that non-local (would-be) attendees stay in their hotels, or dont make the trip, based on [potential for] rain???
also -- anyone know what percentage of attendance is local?

Rain is always an issue for any event at any distance, not so much because of getting wet ... we just don't want to be wrapped around an eighteen wheeler getting there.
