2 types of HAM’s agree disagree.
« on: February 18, 2019, 05:24:41 PM »

I believe their are two types of HAM radio operators and users.

Type 1, the traditional ham radio operator. Interested in the technology of radio, the electronics how it works, how to make it better, building various components of a system, or even an entire system. They get on the radio and use a the radio like “chat rooms”, meet new people, DX’ing etc...

Type 2: interested in using the radio to communicate with family and friends and the groups we are in. Not to much different then how GMRS radios are used. We don’t care about the tech side of how radios work (for the most part), or building systems and parts of scratch or kits, , or talking just to be talking or DXing, etc. we use the radios no differently then how a business uses commercial business radios, we just aren’t a business and we aren’t conducting commercial business etc... we just need a form of wireless communication other then cell phones.

Agree? disagree?

It's "hams", not "HAM's".

The word is not a proper name nor an acronym, so no capitalization. The plural is formed by adding an s. The apostrophe is used with the possessive.

Seeing that you used the word "we" at least six times in your second category, it really boils down to "yourself" and everyone else.

You have been a ham for almost two months now, yet you can pigeon hole all the hams into two categories. How can you type a ham that's been working with radios for over 50 years? Must be nice to see things with such a simplistic view.

I'm type 1, most definitely. You might be painting with too broad a brush though: I suspect that of the sixteen Myers-Briggs personality types only two or three get into ham radio and they are mostly introverts. I believe we did a survey of personality types on eham once, I can't find it but I think it would bear out your observation.

It would be very boring if we were all 'same'.  But if we were, how would anyone know what else is out there.  Also, many hams on VHF and UHF still use 'we' when alone and on the air.  Perhaps they are totally in contact with their alter personality.

Yeah I was kinda wondering that myself. I am an extrovert though. I am sure I am not the only one. But I could very well see introverts. At one time most nerds were introverts. Don’t think that’s the case anymore. I openly admit to being a nerd my entire life though. LOL

I agree without any doubt, that I painted a broad stroke with a broad brush. I am sure there are those are both types that I mentioned.

I also never meant to imply that one type was any better or worse in an respect to the other.

My apologies on that. I was using voice to text. And did not closely proofread the fine details of  capitalization.

Actually that’s a vs it’s call sign, I have been a ham since April, or was it may of last year. Either way I know I am a newbie.

I admit I do like to simplify things. I won’t deny that one bit.

I never meant to imply that one type was any better or worse then the other type I mentioned, or that there weren’t more types.

I ended my post with an agree? Or disagree? And just wanted to stimulate a conversation about different types of hams. I never meant to disparage anyone. So if you felt insulted, then my apologies that wasn’t my intent.

I know a couple of hams who appear to be a variant of #1: They are engineers and have strong interest in the technology and are active in the local club but seldom get on air.

You hit the nail on the head.

I will agree not all people are the same.

What scares me if one profile became the only profile (could be happening) what is the value of amateur radio to the world ? It's origins were not something just to yap back and forth with no interest in anything else.

The Amateur frequency bands can very easily be auctioned off. The VHF/UHF gets top dollar. The other areas there is always somebody interested.

Ask  the stranger. Do you value amateur/ham radio ? huuuuuhhh ?  What ? Important ?

I have thought why not GMRS for the crowd ?

Many of one group never got into amateur radio unless interested in certain things. When that is gone why stay ?

I know I get some of the crowd irritated for any negatives but is that why you got licensed ? An HT and a repeater ? Nothing else. No satellites or meteors or planets or modes or ? (who cares)
