Need an External Soundcard with Kenwood TM-D710GA?
« on: March 31, 2019, 06:20:42 AM »

I have a Kenwood TM-D710GA that I plan to install in a Go-Box (Quicksilver Radio Hammo-Can Pro 35). I’ll use it with a portable 2m/70cm antenna on a tripod mast and a SOTABeams portable dipole antenna for HF for various ARES activities (voice, digital). I may also use it for APRS and WSJT-X (WSPR/FT8). I’ll have RMS Express (WinLink), FLDIGI, WSJT-X installed on a small Win10 tablet with keyboard (ASUS Transfomer Mini T102).

Reading various sources, it’s not clear to me if and when I need an external sound card and when the TNC fills the needs. I’ve not had a radio with TNC before so this is a learning experience. I was thinking a SignaLink USB for external sound card as it’s supported by our ARES.

Thanks for the help!

OK - I’ll take back that silly HF comment. I’ll be using my Elecraft KX2 for HF! Geeze - what was I thinking...

Anyway, it looks like RMS Express/Winlink works directly with the TNC while FLDIGI needs a soundcard like SignaLink, if I’m sorting the facts right.

No need on the 710 for the sound card for Winlink, but for Fldigi you need one.

I use a Signalink with mine.  I use it for FLDigi on our ARES FM nets.  It also works with VARA-FM, soundcard packet, and ADROP with Winlink.  I also use it to monitor the raw packets on the APRS channel using a soundcard TNC in conjunction with the built in APRS TNC.

Not sure about other programs since they probably be used on SSB rather than FM.
