Since the village idiots got the thread about Universal in Misc locked, I'll mention in this one that their last business day is the end of this month.

Indeed, there is always some jackwagon who feels the need to inject politics where it is not appropriate.

Universal Radio has always been a class act, and a quality outfit to do business with.
I'll miss them, but after 50 years in business, clearly Fred and Barb decided it was time to retire.
Best wishes to them for a long, happy, healthy retirement!

Been going there since 1993.  Always an interesting place to look at stuff.
With the imposition of sales tax I maybe thought that some of the brick and mortar locations would be able to eek things out.
At least R&L is still out there...
Guess not...
I hope the owner finds retirement good!

I have had the pleasure of dealing with Universal Radio since 1967 when i received a paper catalog from them after enquiring re a shortwave receiver shortly after moving from ZL to Chevy Chase MD as a teenager.
A very nice personally typed note was also received and I indeed ordered a receiver from them accompanied by a small book on SWLing.
Several months later I purchased a traded Hallicrafters SX-130 and they sent me the matching speaker that had not been part of my purchase explaining it should stay as a set.
I was thrilled!

"Gibby" W8IJ established Universal in 1942 and Universal became one of the longest and well operated sources of equipment for the amateur and SWL'er on the planet.

Many of us will be sad to see Fred and Barb go!

The universal web site covering a plethora of vintage and current rig photo's and descriptions is first class and i am constantly referring to this excellent info source.

Getting a "radio store" off the ground during the war must have been extremely challenging.
I bet "Gibby's" tales of the early years would have been spellbinding.
