Like Dr McCoy used to say, "He's dead Jim". Perfectly describes band conditions today  :'(

What's happening is a high A/K indices (12/3 respectively): disruption in the earth's geomagnetic field.  Bands are noisy, DX is attenuated.  QRM (say FT8 20M daytime or 40M night) makes matters worst.

Don't worry, quiet condx will return.  Just a few weeks ago worked VK0AI on 17M with only a compromised wire antenna with FT8.

Yes, I have resorted to the FT8 as well. Reminds me of watching HF packet frames trying to make a connection.

I've got a dipole up at 45 feet and have worked over 30 countries on 40 meter SSB this month.

The key is having a quiet location.

There is some adage, " if you can't hear them you can't work them".

The converse is also true. "if they can't hear you they won't call you".  Call CQ with as much power as you can afford.

And yet, when a contest is going on, the bands are jumping. And 27 MHz always has activity, while 10 meters is silent...
