The South East Metro ARC (SEMARC) commemorates the USS Ward, which fired the first shots in the War of the Pacific, sinking a Japanese mini-sub at the entrance to Pearl Harbor. The responsible gunnery crew of the Ward consisted of naval reservists from St. Paul, MN. The sub was sunk a few hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The gun used by the crew is placed as a memorial on the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul.
