There should be a way to turn off your vox without having to reduce the power output.

my VOX is always turned off; i could have kept the power at 100w and keyed into a dummy load

There is some truth in the assertions that if pencil and paper had just been invented, it would be the miracle new data storage system.

I carry a pen and small pad of paper with me at all times. Absolutely wonderful. No learning curve. Permanent memory. I can write or draw. Never run out of charge.

I run into people who "write" on their "smart"phone. Heh--that can be a lengthy adventure to jot down a few notes. Then they send it to their wireless printer to make a hard copy. I know how many installers it took some tens of hours to get the "smart"phone to "talk" to the printer.

We certainly live in an age of miracles. I would say it's a miracle to call a phone "smart" and ignore the (potential) intelligence of the person with the phone. I am, seemingly, a rara avis.

On the other hand, my phone never runs out of ink or paper, and I can send my note to anyone who needs it in seconds. Plus I can add a picture if needed.

Of course there is. The break in/VOX button has 3 states OFF, Semi-break in, Full-break in.  Just like nearly every other transciever ever made. In the CW mode with break in set to OFF, you have sidetone but no key up of the rig at all and no power.  The second thing is depending on where the RF gain control is you can mix that sidetone with band noise or not, and you can easily adjust the sidetone level also via the touchscreen.

Negative. My rig has a VOX (Voice Operated Xmit) on or off button with menu settings for VOX Gain, Anti-VOX, and VOX HangDelay, but NONE of these settings affect CW operation.
My rig has a completely separate menu setting for QSK Delay (from nearly 0 to 2.6 seconds).  I can adjust the sidetone frequency and volume via menus as well.

One other thing i can do if i want to send CW with sidetone but no output is to turn the transmitter on or off via a menu setting.  But as with turning the power down, if i do that and then fail to re-adjust the setting back when i am done, i may still go thru some dummy moments before i realize why i am not getting out ;)

I am guessing your rig is not an IC-7300 then.  The original posters rig is an 7300 and so are two of mine.

you would be correct, my rig was made in America.  you did however make the curious statement in response that your answer applied to "nearly every transceiver ever made"...

Any mistake that you both survive, and learn from, isn't a stupid mistake.
It's an educational experience.

If there is one thing I learned early on is that you will always  press the wrong button from time to time.
My preventive measure to prevent a catastrophic mistake is to always turn the power output knob down to 1 or 2 watts before switching off the rig.  That way the next time I power up the worst that will happen when I Tx is my SWR alarm goes off.

This simple procedure has saved me on several occasions from most likely blowing my finals or my amp.
