Always turn the power output knob down to 1 or 2 watts before switching off the rig.

That's what I've always done too.

If there is one thing I learned early on is that you will always  press the wrong button from time to time.
My preventive measure to prevent a catastrophic mistake is to always turn the power output knob down to 1 or 2 watts before switching off the rig.  That way the next time I power up the worst that will happen when I Tx is my SWR alarm goes off.

This simple procedure has saved me on several occasions from most likely blowing my finals or my amp.

Here is an example of that. If your rig is left in CW mode and is interfaced to your PC and you fire up the rig and then the pc in that order, the next morning the serial interface when coming up on the PC will key the rig about 5 times (using RTS or DTR as the keying lines) while the pc is booting up.  This can be bad if you haven't got the correct antenna on the rig yet before the PC goes thru these serial port checks. I always leave my rig in one of the SSB modes and NOT CW or RTTY modes.  Of course you could turn down the power too I guess.

I've been using two different radios in my shack - An old Yaesu FT-747gx and a new Yaesu FT-991A. The FT-991A has a small touch screen and of course the FT-747gx does not.

I have no problem with embracing most modern technology, and I use my mobile phone for lots of things. So I was no stranger by far to touch screens and multiple virtual buttons and menus when I bought the new radio. And I've been just having a wonderful time with my FT-991A - that is until I started using the old FT-747gx again. For those unfamiliar, the FT-747gx is circa late 1980s, and about as simple as it gets. Only 17 buttons on the front panel. No menus. No dumbed down interface. No touch screen. No mode-specific only features. No zillions of mostly unused features.

I now find myself using the FT-747gx much more than the new FT-991A. And its refreshing! I almost never find myself accidentally pushing - or touching - wrong buttons. The screen shows just what I need without a bunch of unneeded indicators.

Speaking of stupid mistakes! That “other” site bans me for life, then sends me an email informing me my membership is about to expire.
Ya okay, the check is in the mail Fred.  ???

Years ago, in my first house, we had a clock on the wall as you entered the kitchen. So it was common to walk into the kitchen, turn to your left, and the look at the clock. When the XYL and I were moving to a new house, we removed the clock and packed it.

But then, there was a empty space on the wall. Every time we walked into the kitchen we found ourselves staring at the wall, and not knowing why. Then it dawned on us that there use to be a clock there. So rather than unpack the clock, we had our 5 year old daughter make a clock using a paper plate and some construction paper. Then we put the paper clock where the old clock was. Then, when we were looking at the wall, we at least knew why.
