XIEGU G1M
« on: June 03, 2019, 07:34:12 PM »

I think it is G1M. New. 4 bands. General HF Coverage Receiver. Good price. 5 watts.

Anybody have one ?

All this stuff seems experimental. Some work and some do not ? Features get added on with time. (firmware updates)

If it is experimental NEW the experiment as all the individual parts age ?

No schematic or parts list.

I still wonder about the receiver. I like to listen to AM Broadcast Band 530-1700 khz, etc. On a daytime scan I know what is normal. (weak stations)

800 khz CW filter is not great.

BUT does the thing receive everything where it should not ?

Excuse me but I need a review by some expert at shortwave listening, etc.

For the price..under $300 it might make a nice toy even just to listen with. (????)

Warranty needed. grr shipping costs are high...

I Don't have the G1M but have the X5105 and it's a good little radio, very compact and perfect for portable use. Built in tuner, battery and antenna analyzer. I get good reports on it.

I use it with the hyendcompany.nl portable 4 band mini 100 watt and furthest contact I got so far on 20 Meter SSB is about 875 miles, the antenna is a good match for the 5 watts that's for sure.

I also at times use it with the much larger myantennas.com EFHW 8010 but for portable use the hyendcomapany.nl antenna is great.

I have had the X-108G for about a year. Used it portable a few times from rare grid square and RV parks. It worked great. Checked into SSB nets running the 20 watts and worked a LOT of FT8 running it about half power -- 10 watts -- to a W4OP loop or a balun end fed wire that was only about 12 feet high. Have used it from home with my vertical and had good fun with it. The 500 Hz CW filter is nice. The 2.4 KHz SSB filter is decent on phone and nice for FT8. The display and controls and menu choices/options are all good. Receiver hears well. Audio is good both RX and TX. Price was nice -- about $450 if I remember right. They didn't get a lot of press or popularity and I'm not sure if they are even offered new any longer. Don't know why. It's a good radio for a nice price. If it breaks I'm probably screwed but so far so good.

Don't know about the model you asked about. But Xiegu in general has been fine for me.

 ;D
I have a new G1M and love this little radio. Comes with a cat control cable,
just load it for Icom-718 as this is what it emulates.
Still working on getting the soundcard to work for FT8 and FT4, etc.
So compact I have it in a padded shell case about brief case size with tuner and 3 wire antennas.
Also spare parts and such. Soon as I get the soundcard to work I am off
to do QRP/P in the lighthouse here in FL.
Good Luck with it. Its a great little radio.

I got a G1M last December and I wish I did not.
It is a nice toy receiver but my unit has no output at all on any band.
I connected my CW key and the plug broke off the IC board.
I put it back but its not good.
I am so sorry I wasted my money on this JUNK!
If you have one and like it good for you , me , I hate this Junk.

I tried one, which belongs to a friend:

He had to repair the mic jack, which broke the first time he used it. I was thinking of getting one but given the reviews, probably not. Which is too bad because the audio is great and my friend's works well now. I am worried about quality control... Quite a few people got lemons, sometimes twice in a row before receiving a good one. If I do get one, I will reinforce the surface-mounted jacks with epoxy. The price is right, but the quality isn't that great. The CW tone is also a square wave, not that pleasant on the ears. It is missing 30m... Anyone wanting to buy one, I'd suggest you get it on Amazon so you can return it if needed. For a bit more money, a QRPVer Minion Mini or SDR would probably be a better choice, if you can wait quite a few weeks for delivery. I am waiting for the QRP-Labs QSX kit, that will be awesome...

I just added my review: https://www.eham.net/reviews/view-product?id=14374  I have two, one of them for just about a year now, and I really like the little rigs.  Yes, the jacks are pretty easy to break off but if you handle in gently you shouldn't have any problems.  It isn't a QC issue.  It's a design issue.  I wouldn't open it up and reinforce anything while it's still under warranty.  After that, sure, it makes sense.

IF you want a receiver that is good..

Find a restored HRO-60 old, tube, and be warned heavy.

Something more modern Icom IC-R71 its a very good radio
and can be found used likely for less than the Xiegu.

As cheap radios go the Xiegu it isn't cheap.  A Yaesu FT818
is a more capable radio  for receiving alone.   Likely far
more maintainable.  For that fact a used FT817, maintanable
and a good radio for QRP work.

Would I buy a Xiegu, no.

Now youre talking!

I rebuilt mine ~ 25 years ago and with a few simple mods it outhears anything on 10M except a much modified 75A4 Ive had since 1965 which is now mostly a CW RX on 160-80. The PP 6V6 audio is superb on AM; and also on a decent SSB signal.....there are some as SDR's become more popular. Mine is often mated with a Viking Valiant.

For QRP CW I often use the 1980's era 5W RadioKit monobanders on 40 thru 15M; any smaller and I couldnt use them.

Late comment.

I got mine at a good low price. I see them all over Ebay selling new for about $250.00  15-20-40-80  (I'd rather have 10/12/15/17)

At the time any review was rare. Such still seems rare.

i (believe it or not) just took mine out of the box to start playing with. So no comments there.

From the few reviews/comments it seems the mike has some kind of problem. Stress perhaps small will tear its connection on the SMT board. I've heard other bad comments as to the mike and audio or...(?)

I waited and contacted the place I bought it from. I simply said most say all the new ones out had these problems and ? I was offered a replacement but considering I have not even used what I have ? I am told they re-contacted XIEGU about the issue and they are aware of it but have made no changes and seemed to have no such plans.

Chinese style ? I bought numerous cheap VHF/UHF things as such that even there reviews vary. (bugs)

Maybe I am wrong but pay good money for some Chinese HF unit ? Besides initial bugs nobody knows anything about longevity.

Legitimate radio gear (lower cost ICOM/KENWOOD/YAESU/ALINCO,etc.) now I think is a bargain so why play with junk ?

I am not sure who is the legit marketer for XIEGU. MFJ says they are. Radioddity says they are. At least Radio Oddity offers some type of warranty.

I also have an FT-817ND.  I'm think about finally selling it.  The receiver in the Xiegu rigs run circles around the FT-817/FT-818.  That's the difference between a 20+ year old design and a recent design.  You wouldn't buy them?  That's your loss.

As far as who the legitimate dealers are:  MFJ is the distributor in the US AFAIK.  Connect Systems, HRO, and Radiodiity are all legitimate dealers.  All will honor the warranty.
