« on: June 24, 2019, 02:15:56 AM »

Here are the highlights:

A 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A72 CPU (~3× performance)
Choice of 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB of LPDDR4 SDRAM
Full-throughput Gigabit Ethernet
Dual-band 802.11ac wireless networking
Bluetooth 5.0
Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports
Dual monitor support, at resolutions up to 4K
VideoCore VI graphics, supporting OpenGL ES 3.x
4Kp60 hardware decode of HEVC video
Complete compatibility with earlier Raspberry Pi products

Switching to USB C for the power input gives them and addition 0.5 amp of  power but requires new power supplies.

I have the 4GB board working with CQrlog and WSJT-X in separate virtual desktops.
The response time is much improved over the Pi 3b.

So power consumption on these are .5 amps lower?  I have used the Pi II and Pi III to make ADS-B receivers for some friends of mine but power consumption has always been a problem.  Lower internal temperature?

That's not how I read it. USB C can handle a bit more current, not that it consumes less. The temperature is much higher as well. Depending where the Pi is deployed, cooling may be needed.

I believe this applies to the 3 also.

My Raspberry Pi 4B runs much warmer than my Pi 3B, so I put one of those giant full-board-sized heat sinks on it to prevent it from throttling under higher workloads (such as SDR code).

If you are worried or just want to monitor:

/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp

. . .will give you the current temperature on your Pi.

A simple bash loop will give you a series:

for ((i=0;i<10000;++i)); do /opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp ; sleep 5; done
