Extra license going away?
« on: July 06, 2019, 02:41:20 PM »

I seem to remember reading an article on this earlier that once they decide on upgrading the technician license that they may do the same for the general license and pretty much do away with the extra.

Does anyone have a link to that if there is one. I have the AARL link to the story regarding the request to petition the update to the technician license but can't find the other article I remember reading on the extra license if it even exists?

That's likely just conjecture on someone's part about the future of licensing in the US.  I doubt it's going to happen.  If the Extra class license goes away, it's going to mean a major restructuring of the Part 97 rules and the entire VE system.  I don't think either the FCC or the league want to go through that.

I believe you're referring to the Wishful Thinking Act of 2019.

This is akin to vapor ware in the computer industry.

So everyone is convinced that it's "vaporware" when in fact the FCC is currently going over the doing exactly that with the Technician license. Sounds to me that it may be a case of I worked hard to get my extra license how dare they give the same privileges to those lowly General license people.

Well, they could take the extra subbands away from ham radio and reallocate to, er, who wants HF spectra aside from hams anyway?  Then the extra license becomes meaningless...  Not that I want that reallocation to happen...

Well if the FCC was annoyed with the grousing back when Incentive Licensing was imposed, they really should be prepared to endure a grousefest if they do go to a single license class structure.

those who agree with giving away privileges may as well lean fully into their inclination and lobby for the FCC to kill amateur radio and just issue CB licenses to all takers with privileges to all the present ham bands and no exam required.  wouldn't that be special  ???  ::)

"They" is the ARRL in this case, not the FCC. The objectives seem to be 1) selling more radios, thereby selling more advertising, and 2) making it more attractive to get a license, growing the number of licensed active hams, thereby increasing the number of ARRL members.

Currently CEPT requires an Advanced or Extra class license.

http://www.arrl.org/cept
European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) radio-amateur license -- allows US Amateurs to travel to and operate from most European countries without obtaining an additional license or permit.

There are two levels of reciprocity with the European Community under what is known as CEPT:

Full reciprocal operating privileges are accorded to US Amateur Extra and Advanced class licensees under  CEPT Recommendation T/R 61-01 (CEPT Radio Amateur License).

Limited reciprocal operating privileges are accorded to US General class licensees in European countries that have adopted CEPT ECC Recommendation (05)06.

There is no equivalent CEPT class for the US Technician or Novice license, therefore a US Technician or Novice licensee is not eligible to operate under CEPT reciprocity.

Why not, the licensing structure today has almost no meaning anyway. May as well hand them out free.

We don't need no stinkin' badges, er, licenses...LOL!  Everyone has a skip handle and can run 10000 watts or more.  Broadcast music too!

Pirate Radio.  Argh me mateys...

Oh well, genuine amateur radio was fun while it lasted.
