Controller for HT Fox
« on: July 16, 2019, 03:07:11 PM »

I did some searching to find a buy it or build it controller to turn a small HT into a Fox. I found a lot of all-in-one units but not just a controller. Can someone point me towards something that will work.
Thnx

BYONICS Tiny Tracker 3 WITH the POCKET FOX CHIP.
Replace the tracker chip with the POCKET FOX chip and use the PF software to load the information. If you don't find it on the BYONICS site e-mail BYON and ask him about the pocket fox option and the software. There is information about cables for the various HTs also.
This gives you tones to start with and then a morse code message and your call sign.
BYONICS PicCon UNITS are another controller. A little more involved than the POCKET FOX but can be learned quickly. And NO, I'm not a salesman for Byonics. I just use them alot.
If you want a VOICE type controller you can use a VOX radio or take an old RADIO SHACK VOX mick and change the 2.2uf electrolytic to streach the delay. Then use an MP3 player with short files made up with wisecracks. If you set up the files so each one is 1 min. long you can use 10 of them for timing and have the FCC ID each 10 min.
ONE FOX --- 15 seconds of wisecrack -- 45 seconds of silence.  9 of these then a file with the CALL SIGN and info for the FOX HUNT.
2 FOXES --- split the min into 2  --- the first FOX wisecrack during the first part of the min. center it up  -- then put the second FOX wisecrack during the last half of the min.
If you use a 15 to 20 second wisecrack both will work with out running into each other.    Try to get the same brand and version of MP3 players. THERE IS A REASON FOR THIS.
There is something called TRANSITION TIME ---what is it? Take an old JUKE BOX with records. Each record has the time for the song printed on the label. If you take 10 records and play them you have the total time of each record BUT you also have to ADD the time it takes to put the record on the turntable --- play it -- take it off and change the record to the next one --- and DO IT AGAIN 10 times. Depending on the JUKE BOX it could take from a couple of seconds to 15 or so. This happens with the MP3 players.
GET A STOP WATCH and time  10 or 30 or 60 1 min files to see how much OVER each set is. Then divide by the number of files to find out how much to cut from the 1 min.     THIS IS THE TRANSITION TIME ----IF YOU RUN 2 OR MORE FOXES you'll NEED this. Especially if you run a long DELAY start of one of the FOXES.
I know this is a lot but if you have to time 2 or more foxes to not run into each other OR IF YOU HAVE A WISECRACK AND AN ANSWER .
See YOU TUBE  " REVILE FOX HUNT "  Listen to it all the way through and you will see what I'm talking about. It also shows you about putting a sub audible tone  like a CTCSS TONE at the start of the wisecrack to open the VOX up so you don't lose the start of the joke. The DELAY change above keeps it from chopping off the punch line.
Play with it . The BYONICS are good for morse code but the VOICE FOXES are more fun for people who don't know morse code.

I posted a new PicCon controller video on YOU TUBE with both 2 meter and 80 meter controlling. It can be used for HTs and mobiles. Under ARDF CONTROLLERS.
