duplicate license
« on: July 18, 2019, 02:54:19 PM »

My truck was stolen a couple of weeks ago, and my amateur license was in it. I thought it would be a simple matter of going online and ordering a new one, but apparently not. The FCC has gone paperless. From what I can understand, I can print one off the FCC website, but I have never seen a site more confusing. After about an hour I gave up. Can anyone explain how this is done? Thanks, Jerry N7XLR

There are a couple of options -- explained here:

How to Obtain an Official FCC License Copy

I had good results with http://www.ae7q.com/misc/.

Under the FCC's "grant" system, an officially printed license isn't necessary to operate a ham station.

True, the "license" is the electronic record in the ULS --  but there are instances in which it is useful or required to present "hard copy" documentation ... perhaps the most common being the paperwork that must be presented to state Motor Vehicle departments to obtain ham radio call-sign license plates.  ;)

Thanks for al the responses. I've already been through all that, and am still totally confused. Due to a slight speech problem I have a vanity call sign that was easier to say. The FCC  has that call sign listed to someone else, and says canceled. But it does not list it under my name. I was able to get a "reference copy", but it says it is not valid for any legal purposes. I currently have amateur plates on my car. But at some point when I replace the car, are they going to require official proof of a license before I can transfer that plate to another car?

Go to this link:

https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/results.jsp;JSESSIONID_ULSSEARCH=kg3LdymDTLsM6Ts2tfkpnQ4Tg3B1tZ6tPxgSCyQNQCDnWJJLS0tz!1322876164!-161052424

There are two names listed:
  - Pat L Matthews, whose license was canceled on 1/8/1998
  - Jerry A Hammons. If this is you, you're licensed.

Cut out one of your reference licenses (discarding the "this is not an official license" stuff), sign it, and present it at the DMV.

In the highly unlikely event that they say it's not good enough, you can access your FCC account and print out an official license. You'll need the password that the FCC gave you when you got your first license, or when you got your first FRN. If not, you can request a new password, but I'd worry about that when your reference license is rejected, which it probably won't be.

Go to
https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/enterFrnForPwdReset.do

and reset your password.
