Wait 'till you see what it costs you to register and title your car  ::) ... and what it will cost you to insure your "little slice of paradise"  8) . Those hurricanes have left a lasting scar on the hides of the insurance companies that survived!

Glad I'm outta there!

One very happy Arkansan!  :D

Bill,
If you're from the Sandusky area, we're only about an hour's drive away.
I live in a western suburb of Cleveland. And I know about the Sandusky Bay Bridge.
Good fishing spot! And you just can't beat Lake Erie Walleye.

In fact, three weekends ago I was in Perkins Twp helping a buddy of mine do some
antenna work. He's not far from the Ohio Veterans Home. I bet you know where that is.

For me, retirement is about 8 years away. And we're already contemplating
whether to stay put, or move somewhere. Right now, staying where we are seems
like the best option. But a lot can happen in 8 years, so we'll see. You never know.
The only reason I'd move to Florida is to be close to a cruise port. My XYL loves
taking cruises. Living close to a cruise port would make that drastically cheaper.

Like I tell people all the time, sure we get some snow in the winter here. But that's
the price we pay for not having to deal with hurricanes. Ohio summers are fabulous.

Yep... We're the same age. My wife is five years older, and already retired from teaching.
Earl Carrier (K8WLP) sk lived near there near Soldier's Home. He was quite an Elmer!

So I prefer Sandusky and also Leamington, Ontario just across the lake.

I live North of Circleville, work at OSU. Got my actual degree in Nursing.
I work with Heart/LVAD and Lung transplants.

I did manage to pick up all of the commercial FCC licenses.
Commercial Telegraph, GROL/ Radar Endorsement, GMDSS O/M.
I took three years of Vocational Electronics in High School,
and went to DeVry for a little while.

So I'm looking for any prospects. I'd like to keep my hand in some kind of work.

Two more observations here on Special Secret Squirrel Assigment from deep in HOT...

Someone mentioned using their car antenna in the driveway.
Or using your car as a Mobile Repeater.

Just in the yard here, right outside of the sliding back door,
there is a slip. Affixed to the slip, a sailboat..
You could easily use your sailboat in lieu of the car...
After all, you should equip it for HF Amateur Radio, anyway.
So why not slip in a UHF/VHF and do the Mobile Repeater thing?
Certainly you could cross link: And use UHF/VHF hand-held from your dwelling to activate your HF Rig on the boat!

I also see: Leftover Modular Telco plug indoors. There would be a lot of existing wire conected to that. I wonder if it has been abandoned?
You could find out..
Or, if it is still connected to "something" on the far end, but not in use?
Well... You just might trace it down to a more distant location, say 80 metres or so,.and REALLY Cut the Cord!
Remember, Ham Radio is the Next Best Thing to Being There!

Abandoned CATV wires might also be a possibility...

These could be used for just lead ins from ohhh say a Caulked Vertical,
or in some cases, as actual antennas themselves... Caveat Emptor.

Adding to the above on the mobile (maritime?) repeater/cross link idea,
You could even run a clandestine temporary feed line directly to the boat directly.

You could run off if an isolated secondary marine battery for hours or more. And then, there’s also Shore Power! And the boat wouldn’t necessarily have to be that close by, either. It could even be in dry dock miles away, and you could still pull this stunt off.

So There You Have It: Several Ways to use a boat.
Who says a boat needs to merely be a hole in the water that you throw money into! ;-)
