Will Be in Japan Next Year - TH-D74A worth taking?
« on: August 01, 2019, 09:03:44 AM »

I will be in Japan early next year on holiday.  Is it worth taking a TH-D74A for APRS?  I'm getting ready to purchase a new HT as an upgrade from Baofeng now.  I understand Japanese (moderately) and speak (poorly) but am more focused on APRS or other mode to track my whereabouts.  Is any of this feasible in Japan (I'm FCC amateur extra)?  I also plan to operate my station in California remotely from my laptop but this question has to do with using an HT in Japan for APRS tracking.

I can't find much information on using APRS outside of the US.  I'm guessing Japan might possibly be friendly to this given the level of use and interest in amateur radio there.

I cannot answer your question about APRS as I have never tried it when I am there.

Regarding licensing, here is everything you need to know:  https://www.jarl.org/English/3_Application/A-3.htm

Thank you very much for the licensing info.  I'm 6 months away from departure and I'll make sure I take care of this before I leave.  I know that area well and it will be convenient to my apartment when I'm in Tokyo.
