Help with APRS connection with Kenwood TH-D74
« on: September 24, 2019, 10:06:06 AM »

Hi everyone, I am new to APRS, I’m a new owner of a TH-D74, and have been tinkering with the APRS settings, however, I don’t see my info on APRS.fi. Not sure if it’s an issue on my end. Here are some details

Kenwood TH D72A, with Diamond srh320a, 5 watts out
144.390, band B, with data set to band B
Call sign set as KI7YBU
Radio set to APRS 12, with “bcon “ (beacon) showing on the screen
Beacon method - Auto
Initial interval - 1 minute
Path is set Type: New-N 2hops wide1-1, wide2-1

When I go to "LIST" I see stations coming in. When I search on APRS.fi, I can see raw packets (though I cannot interpret them), but I cannot seem to beacon or send messages.

Any help would be appreciated.

I went to http://aprs.fi/KI7YBU and saw your station's position from yesterday. When I looked at the information for your station at http://aprs.fi/info/KI7YBU , it showed the packet came from a TH-D74. Looks like you got out. It also had a comment "147.040 MHz", which you can replace with some other text.

One common issue relates to beaconing your position. If you have the radio set to use its GPS to determine your location and the GPS doesn't have a position lock, the radio won't send APRS packets. If you are operating from one place, you can take the GPS readout and save it in a position memory (the radio can hold up to 5 locations in position memories). Then you enable the position memory instead of using the GPS. If you are moving around, you'll obviously want to go with the GPS.

Good luck, and 73!

Thank you for your reply. I am not sure what I set differently, but APRS seems to working fine now. Of course, knowing what setting I changed to make it function would be much better. Oh well.

I have the same setup.

What is your signal strength?  Make sure it is set to "H" and will show on the screen as "H" which is full power.
