Howdy, what is going on?

While in Desert Hot Springs, the repeater on the high mountain nearby was private.
now I heard a Youtube channel lambast some government people for banning ham radio repeaters on mountains.

Am not trying to troll, it's a genuine question by a nonresident alien who loves the variety of repeaters in the USA and CA.

Hi Chris - my understanding, although limited, is that the ham repeater that was banned was an isolated event and was tied to the fact that it was occupying space in the repeater vault and tower for free and the local government owner decided that it wanted rent payments.  Over the years, many ham repeaters were fortunate to obtain free or low cost space in commercial locations.  Inevitably, those (good) times have passed.

In Southern California there is a proliferation of "private" repeaters.

Oh, ahh - that's a relief! DEcades ago, the very same issue bothered a Scottish Repeater Group.

The repeater was outright banned, but was given the option of paying commercial rates to CalFire, the state agency involved, for the repeater to remain in the location.

The entire incident was blown way out of proportion by one YouTuber with a definite right-wing, anti-California agenda.  After that, it was picked up by other "news" sources, again with conservative agendas. Probably the best explanation of the issues is the statement published on the ARRL website:  http://www.arrl.org/news/report-causes-concern-and-confusion-in-california-s-amateur-radio-ranks

Reading between the lines in the ARRL post is seems that a repeater is involved in emergency communications and has proof they are alright. If it is strictly a ham repeater with no ties to Ecom. They are asked to pay. I don't see any right or left wing in those statements. Leave politics out of it.

Right wing anti-Califorina agenda??? I am confused.
The right wing believes that you should be responsible to pay your way and take personal responsibility for your actions and such.
The left wing wants to take other peoples stuff , like tax payer money or owned stuff and give it to someone else, for free.  Free health care, free housing, and in this case free tower access to tax payer owned property.  So how is it that it's some RIGHT wing conspiracy that this guy is upset that his tax payer funded free tower access is going away?  No one involved in the revocation of this guys access has ANYTHING to do with ANYTHING that's of a conservative nature.  The guy was getting free stuff from Santa Claus (the democrat Cal government).  So both ends of that were liberal.... wanting free stuff and getting free stuff are liberal ideas.  Paying for what you get is pretty much not that.  IE capitalism... you pay me, I sell you something you paid for.  Nothing is really free.  So then the liberal government has a new liberal (but still somewhat capitalistic idea) of taxing him... or charging him a fee. If you are paying the government, it's a tax.  Look up the definition of tax, it's sort of EXACTLY this.  Guy gets mad cuz he has to PAY for something he wasn't paying for before  (no more Santa Claus) which is the first time we actually sort of witness a capitalistic thought process here...before it was the government taking tax dollars and giving it to the repeater guy for free.  Lets call that wealth redistribution, again,  it's defined somewhere... Sort of like a twisted Robin Hood thing.  But low and behold, the crazy liberal government is making the crazy liberal welfare recipient actually work and pay for his previously free crap brought to him by the tax payers of California.

Got to ask, what version of the dictionary are you looking up right wing and it says anything to this effect?
you might take that one back to the store and get a new one.  Or order one on line form say a seller from Texas, or even Ohio.  Cuz the one you got, ain't the one every one else has.
