Alinco DR 605 on Packet
« on: October 22, 2019, 07:52:18 AM »

Trying to get a packet station up and running.  Seem to be having a hard time getting things to work.  First of all, I tried my Yaesu FT 2400.  No luck.  Not putting out a signal for some reason.  Software acts like it works but no signal being transmitted.  I have wire, tested, rewired, retested, ticked off the XYL by having her hold the probe on my multi meter off and on yesterday, retested.  All seems to be just fine.  Going to try it with my Alinco DR 605 next.  The manual for the radio gives the pin connections for the modular plug that goes into the microphone socket but it also shows a speaker plug that plugs into the back of the radio but does NOT show where those wires connect on the TNC wiring.

Have a friend that has offered to lend a hand but there is something about doing it myself that I find satisfying, even if I plead for some pointers on here.

I never was one for packet with a regular TNC.  Always used a Baycom and I found that a fantastic piece of hardware.  Still have mine, but has to be on a pure DOS machine to work, which I don't have.  Also, cannot do WINLINK, APRS, etc. on the baycom.

OK, a few things to investigate before pulling your hair out, coming from someone who has little left himself:

"Not putting out a signal for some reason.  Software acts like it works but no signal being transmitted."
1) What software and what TNC are you using?
Do you have no power output meaning rig is not keying (PTT missing) or no transmit packet audio on the FM carrier (TxAud missing)?
Did you load your callsign into the TNC?
2) Other than voltage on the PTT line, I have no idea what you might be testing with a multimeter.  Watch an inline wattmeter or the PTT indicator, but ticking off the XYL is always a no-win.
3) Have you connected audio ground and PTT ground return to the correct pins of the connector?  Those grounds are different lines with some TNCs and some radios.
4) Have you listened to the TNC Rx Audio In lead with an audio monitor amplifier to ensure that receiver audio is making it into the TNC?
5) Have you listened to the TNC Tx Audio Out line to ensure that transmit audio is getting to the rig?  Can you adjust the transmit tone level for proper deviation of +/- 3 kHz?
6) Did you try testing over the air on 144.390 (APRS) or 145.010 (PKT) with a nearby packet friend?  Ask him to connect to your TNC and echo back your transmission if received.  Or he could put his phone handset next to his speaker and let you listen to your packet signal.

OK, got the wiring figured out.  Used the multi-meter to check for proper wire connections (resistance).

Using an MFJ tnc and it is working on a couple packet programs, but cannot get it to work on Winlink.  Just not getting the TNC respond to the computer in that program.  Going to do some more experimenting today.

Thanks for the response!
