Best Morse Training Software?
« on: November 10, 2019, 07:17:13 AM »

I want to use my iPad for learning to copy morse.  I’ve been using Morse-it and it’s pretty good but I’d like two additional features:

* The ability to introduce a delay into the text to be encoded - perhaps via some sort of meta character e.g. <d5> for delay 5 seconds

* A feature that allows for a shift in pitch, again via a meta character perhaps

The reason is that I’d like to create some typical two-way conversations and then play them back to myself while I’m commuting on the train.  Having the two above features would allow me to do that.

If I try this in Morse-it, I just get a continuous stream of words, all at the same pitch, and with no breaks - not very realistic.

Is there an iPad package that can do what I want?

Thanks and regards...Paul

It's not Morse Code Training software, specifically.  And not necessarily the "best", but instead is fully customizable.

The HotPaw Basic application for the iPad (and iPhone) (disclaimer, I'm the developer)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hotpaw-basic/id295464266

http://www.hotpaw.com/rhn/hotpaw/#4

can be programmed to play any text string as Morse Code at a customizable audio frequency and WPM.   The command:

morse "CQ DE N6YWU",20,50,20,700

will play the CQ at 20 WPM, 50% volume, 700 Hz.
(The 2nd "20" can be configured lower for Farnsworth slow down between characters).

fn sleep(5) : rem will pause for 5 seconds

So you could, in Basic code, just generate a bunch of random text or words, play each string at changing frequencies, and insert whatever delays you want.

Can you reliably work 5 wpm?
Then the best training is to get on the air.
Get comfortable making contacts, then start looking for guys calling a little bit faster.
That's how I started in the dark ages and ended up conversational at 20 wpm on a straight key.
Just wish I had kept at it.

There are many out there both online and offline as well.
You can usually find them in the app stores of your phone or ipad.
But which one is right for you?
Thats a question only you can answer.
Try them out, if they seem to be effective, use it.
If not ditch it.

Each person learns different so one method that works for me wont work for you.
I find that when teaching someone it works best to keep their interest if i can make it fun.
the k6rau morse code course is kind of dry in a funny way and you can learn the letters, but i would not rely on it only.

Your brain is the best software. Learn the alphabet and numbers and get on the air.

Get comfortable making contacts, . . .

Couldn't agree more.  The positive pressure really reenforces what you've learned.  The joy of realizing you now speak a super cool new language comes after that!

Also, good on ya for learnin' the code.  I still find it the go to mode for absolute enjoyment and un-rushed qso's.

Look for you On The Air om!  73

In the day of iPhone aps there is still an old school method for copying 2-station QSOs and that is the MFJ-418 Code Tutor. HRO, DX Engineering and Gigaparts show it to be out of stock. You might check with MFJ or find one used.

Morse Code Ninja might interest you. I'm using it to build speed and instant word recognition. The voice is bothersome so I manually toggle the audio ON/OFF after each word or sentence.
