Help using DMR
« on: November 21, 2019, 03:25:55 PM »

A friend of mine asked me to join a DMR Talk Group, 31021. I don't get on VHF/UHF much at all, but I do have an Icom 5100 hooked up. Can someone please tell me how to connect to a DMR Talk Group or suggest a dumb-proof crash course in getting connected?

You need to buy a DMR radio. Your Icom is not capable of DMR.
After that you will need to access the DMR network either through a local DMR repeater or your own hotspot.
Try starting here: https://www.bridgecomsystems.com/

Icom 5100 appears to be a D-Star radio.  Even with a hotspot you usually need a radio designed for the mode you want to use. There are D-Star reflectors that are bridged to a few specific DMR talkgroups but I doubt your 31021 talkgroup is one of them.  One way to operate on both D-Star and DMR systems without having a radio for those modes is to use a DVmega DVStick 30 or similar.  It is a USB dongle that connects to a Windows computer and uses the computer speakers and microphone.

Yep, first thing out the gate. You need a DMR radio and not a D-Star radio.
Once you have a radio, you will need to get on the DMR-MARC site and apply for an ID.
Once you have an ID you will need to program your radio with that ID and the TG is question along with the repeater and time slot information for your region (local repeater) that is on the DMR-MARC system.

DMR-MARC doesn't issue IDs. That's done at radioid.net.

As to a repeater on the DMR-MARC system, no, there's more. DMR-MARC, OR Brandmeister, or any of the many others. One might also be in an area where theres a stand alone DMR network not affiliated with any of those. RMHAM and the Wyoming DMR Project for example.

A number of hotspots available these days will allow cross-mode operation.
