CPO for bug type practice
« on: December 10, 2019, 01:12:20 PM »

Can't seem to find anything but straight key oscillators. Would like to practice paddle type keying.  Any leads?

That's all you need if you want to practice with a bug (semi-auto key).

This one does both iambic and straight key, and auto detects what's plug in when you turn it on.  I have to hold down the dah part of my bug when I power it, so it detects it as a straight key instead of a paddle.

Confused, still, so simply put, if I push paddle right I will get dits, and if I push left I will get dahs? The schematic would indicate this, but I don't know the logic of the chip. I use a vibrokeyer for paddle mode.

Your confusion is with terminology. A CPO is a code practice oscillator. I makes a tone when the circuit is closed. With a paddle and a CPO you need an electronic keyer in between to generate dits and dahs when you use the paddle.

There is the MFJ-401E for $95. https://www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=MFJ-401E

And you can find keyers on Ebay.

I heartily endorse the K1EL kits.  Great price, good feature set, easy to use.

I use my Icom 756ProIII for code practise, without transmitting a signal. Just go to CW mode and turn break-in off. You will hear the sidetone. Other Icom radios work the same way. I don't know about the other brands, but I suspect that they can do this too.

Another option is to connect to a dummy load and reduce power to minimum.

I ordered the qrp guys trainer, the K1el model was out of stock.  My rig has
a practice mode, but it is waaay to big for lugging around, and even 1st class airplane seats don't have power for a yaesu dx3000!
