UK- Christmas week lectures
« on: December 28, 2019, 06:48:40 AM »

The Christmas lectures week.
In the UK there every year at Christmas there is a TV show. It is basically a top flight university lecturer or elite scientist challenged with explaining their particular topic or advance scientistic topic to children. These are not super brainy kids either. None are 10 years old and have four degrees and a doctorate already called Sheldon. Just normal kids with normal child like grasp of the world around us. To be fair even an adult learns from these shows, the teaching is so good.

Why do I mention this? Well I want to explain a thick persons guide to lecturers on radio topics. I say thick but In fact I am extremely capable but only in the skills I have as a builder, not as a radio genius or university degreed computer scientist. One of the main stumbling blocks in this hobby is that the people teaching are unable to teach anything other than the book and cant actually teach or communicate properly. They cold read the book, hope you  understand it and don't ask questions as they them selves don't understand it too. I know and realise every club can not have there own Jonny Ball or who ever you remember. But that’s the great thing about Facebook and YouTube. There is that person and there is that teacher. Find him and learn that bit extra you need to get that subject expert.

Allow me to explain where we are going with this.

 At a university, a lecturer walks into a training room or lecture hall, in front are 50 students. Even on day one of that course those kids already have a specific raised level of understanding of what's going to be taught to them. They have already been educated to understand the basics and from those foundations you can start to build your knowledge. Everyone is at the same place and same level and equal understanding. There's a lot of foundations and building blocks going on, but because as a builder its the only way I can explain and understand, until I understand the knowledge of Brick A, I cant work with Brick D and Brick F is total gibberish to me.

I see this copied all the time in radio, the elitist snobs and radio techno geeks shouting down the lower ranks requests for information. At first I thought it was just me being a novice. Then I saw and had someone explain the two tier system of them and us. But now after all these years I see three levels of radio training. All tiers are all extremely guarded and most of all the education and training from the higher levels is shocking towards the lower levels. The medium levels help novices but the Aloof do not. Geniuses only talk to fellow geniuses and Sheldon’s can not explain what they mean to Pennies as Sheldon has been to qualified for so long he cant remember what it is like to be a novice and as such thinks the best course of plan is either to ignore (very common) or to blind read a book thinking that in this book, Sheldon can understand the information, Penny needs. That’s in the class room as well as the air waves too, elitists or band police, radio snobs or what ever  the name is up to you. You as a teacher can not remember what it is like to learn and how to learn a difficult subject you are now a master at. Or as a poor master you are unable to break the subject   down in such away that it teaches a new beginner.

Here's some truly amazing heretic words for you;
If you explain to a novice , a point or page from a book. Directly as it is written word for word and the novice does not understand or comprehend it , it is not the novice that is at fault, or the books fault-
IT IS THE INSTRUCTORS INABILITY TO EXPLAIN CORRECTLY THAT'S AT FAULT

. You are supposed to take that information and present it and translate it into a formate suitable for the student in front of you. Its up to the teachers to teach not the learners to learn. We as learners know nothing by the very description of being new learners.

I see hundreds of you tube radio lecturers and teachers on and off Facebook , YouTube and Instagram and web forums you cant ask a simple question with out the radio snobs shutting you down or diluting the post with their own answers to the wrong question that your original question is lost.

Here’s an example; I did originally write a more detailed named and group names account but changed it, know how much spite and bile there is on those Facebook pages and cant be bothered with them.

I wanted to step up from 70cm/ 2m FM simplex to digital. Its an easy step you would think. I buy a  radio, a code key a computer disk and programming cable and plug every thing in and away we go chatting like a good un. So I go to Facebook and  go to two of the largest UK Facebook sites on this form of radio subject and I join up and I ask the usual questions, how do I do this and how does this work. On the one web site this guy -who owns it or is an admin - or voted himself as number one top dog. Pops up and goes “I have written the worlds greatest page ever on this topic, you must read it”, so I do, several times and its rubbish totally utter rubbish. It lectures you on this form of radio  but does not teach you any thing new. Its a straight reprint of the books and Wikipedia. So I do the usual forums, e-books and paper books and the like and still have this pile of question at a truly novice level that no one  has every  asked or got answered. I see them cropping up every so often on the forums and Facebook and again and again they get shouted down, so I start to think this form of radio section is a very abusive topic should I as a novice should I really be dealing with  such trolls and snobs. So I ask my question and this guy  “ I have written the worlds greatest page ever” kicks off, I have not bothered to read his page. I duly explain I have and it does not answer my question, as I have now offended the admin’s mate and voted in top dog guy by asking a question your booted off that Facebook page as your a trouble maker and a hieratic. So off to the other  face book site, I search and search again and the same thing, question asked before and shouted down. Now this time I decide that for the novices out there I am going to get this question answered, in that way when others walk my foot path through the snobs and trolls and screamers and you tube performers and UK radio organisations that they will get an answer and not verbal abuse. I dont care about loud mouth idiots I deal with them all day, so;

We ask,

We get slaughtered,

We get booted off!!

I had not truly realised the utter hatred radio man has for fellow radio man. For my PM account is stuffed, hundreds of beginners novices and amateurs flood me with congratulations and questions they want asking but wont or cant  due to t he vicious trolling and abuse. The shame is that the PM account is also flooded with bile and spit and venom from the snobs and elitists from the audacity to ask such herocy and to do so repeatedly, to argue with the admin and question his skills and to rebuff the lecturers and screamers and shouters. I had you tube presenters calling me and explaining that in his video its explain and in this pod cast its done to death and  when I look, its not,
In fact its not, in a million other places too. In fact when you really start to look and study the radio training subjects there’s massive holes all over it and to step in a hole and to ask is almost certain digital suicide. I have been banned from all but one radio of this type face book site, pretty well any of the radio Facebook pages I join I have to turn off all notifications and wait to block and delete the hundreds of idiots from the pm account and read through their bile as they recognise the name or the questions from the other beginners popping up again

For me one of the best parts of being a teacher and or teaching students is the fact that every single day is a learning day, not for the student but for me. Everyday after 50 years in my profession I get an apprentice to asked a question I have never heard of before and a logical or reasonable chain of thought connected to it. It is irreverent to me that the student insists that four bricks plus one brick is ten bricks. Its the their logic that’s wrong not the lack of fingers to count  on. That logic once you as a teacher get them to explain their new hypothesis, it’s to you to then explain it logic to the student and therefore educates the student. Throwing the chalk brush at them and shouting at them to shut up does not explain how four plus one is not ten bricks or saying to the student  the answer is a concrete block, when the question was bricks.

As a novice it is our right to make mistakes and to not understand, its the job of the Christmas lecturer to start teaching us at a level we learn from and to educate us as we grow. A Christmas lecture is the best way to get that spark started in a child's eyes and to energise their brain in that  topic. May be we do it for Radio as well?
