Dual mode operation with the Yaesu FTM-100DR
« on: January 26, 2020, 08:33:40 PM »

Has anyone had any luck operating on two separate vhf frequencies with the FTM-100DR at the same time?  Like having APRS transmitting and receiving plus receiving transmissions on another VHF frequency. If not I think the radio was a waste of $$ if it can't do duel mode at the same time.
thanks

Hi there.....this radio does not have dual receivers....so no, you cannot operate APRS and voice on two frequencies at the same time. (The closest thing might be using the dual watch feature of the radio, but that's not the same thing). The radio is not a waste of $$. But as a buyer, you need to do your homework and make sure you know what you're buying.

The lack of dual receivers was what led me to replace this radio in my truck with an FTM-400XDR as soon as I could afford it.  I moved the FTM-100 into the house where it serves as my primary 2 meter/70 centimeter and Fusion radio. The APRS function has been turned off ever since because the house doesn't go anywhere.  Yet...

The radio will not do 2 frequencies at the same time. It is not advertised as doing it either. Their are two kinds of dual band radios in the ham radio world. Some will do only one frequency at a time, some will do two at a time. It's important to read the specs and select the radio that you need for your application. The rig you want is the FTM-400. It will do APRS on one side and another frequency on the other side simultaneously. Also, the new FTM-300 will do this as well.
