JTAlert
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:29:15 AM »

I'm currently running JTAlert v2.13.10. I want to upgrade to the latest version 1.15.8 but my virus software flags it as malware. I tried to add exceptions for my JTAlert folder but it was still flagged. I disabled Bitdefender, but when I try to temporarily disable Real-time protection in Win 10 security the slider switch is grayed out and I can't disable it. I did some poking around on the internet and the solution was to edit the registry to disable Win 10 security. I'm not about to mess with my registry. Any ideas on how to disable win 10 real-time security so I can download the latest JTAlert? For the life of me I don't understand why the obviously very skilled author of JTAlert can not figure out how to make his software play nicely with antivirus software. I have a TON of software and JTAlert is the only one that pukes when trying to update.

Sometimes it's nothing in the software but just the fact that few people have downloaded it yet so your antivirus in not recognizing it as safe. Norton gives me the option of downloading it anyway. Otherwise just wait a month and try it again. I had that issue with one version of WSJT-x some time ago.

Well...maybe, but like I said, I have a ton of software. Some very popular and some not so popular, and this is the only software that does this. I disabled Bitdefender and was able to download and install the latest JTAlert. However, when I enabled Bitdefender again it detected a virus and removed JTAlert. I even added JTAlert to the exception list and it still didn't like it. Guess I'll just go back to v 2.13.10.

Too bad the author doesn't spend more time fixing this issue. I can name 30+ people from local clubs who have the same problem and have chosen not to use it because of all the hoops to jump through.

I just finished downloading the new version and installing it. No problems here, using AVG.

JTAlert does not have a virus. Many AV programs are way too restrictive on their keywords. Much has been discussed about it on the JTAlert web site. If your av flags it, as has been said, simply make a exception for the folder.

Are you sure you got your JTAlert from the right place?

Exactly what is the program complaining about?

If your anti-virus software isn't respecting an exceptions folder, that is worrisome.  That suggests that it has examined the binary itself and somehow found something wrong.

There's kind of two levels of security to discuss.

One is that Windows introduced this idea a while back of a kind of minimum registration of programs.  But, it costs money and a lot of ham software won't pay for it.  That can generate complaints from your A/V software.  But it usually says, pretty explicitly, that the program is not "signed" or some such.  Or that not many have downloaded the binary.

The second is a program binary with an actual infection of some kind.  You may actually have managed to get the second problem somehow, which is more serious.  If that is the case, it should tell you (if you inquire) what kind of problem it found (the virus will be named if you ask for details).

I have been using JTAlert for some time, and love the functionality of the software.

But I now must move to MacOS on my MacPro, using DogParkSDR to operate my Flex  6300, WSJT-X, and MacLoggerDX.  They all work great, even better than my former Windows products.

But I miss JTAlert, and Laurie apparently does not support MacOS, as I am sure he has enough to do supporting Windows.

Is anyone aware of a product for the Mac with similar functionality to JTAlert?

Thanks!
