Gigaparts, offensive upcharges on shipping partial orders
« on: February 20, 2020, 09:29:39 AM »

So, I placed an order through Gigaparts for a charger for my FT3D, RT systems software with cable and a Diamond antenna. At the time I opted for a quicker shipping method of UPS and paid the extra $7 for that.

I receive a notification that the RT systems software and cable are backordered for two weeks (ok, yes, its backordered everywhere) so that's expected. I am asked in an email if I would like a partial shipment (so I can get the charger and the antenna before 2-4 weeks). I ask that they ship those as they are in-stock. I receive a follow up email that they want to charge me an additional $9.29 for shipping on the split-order.

I find that offensive; as normally the shipping would of been free (I only paid $7 more because I originally asked for UPS delivery). If I am going to wait 2-4 more weeks then any benefit of UPS shipping to get it quicker is a moot-point.

Today I called their service number and was told that they will still want to charge me $9.29 for split shipping... But now I am incensed; because this is just price-gouging and I am essentially paying for their inability to complete an order. Annoyed, I am just cancelling the order for the RT Systems software and cable and instead will wait to buy it directly from RT or someone else.

They don't really seem to care about customer satisfaction; its all about how much they can upcharge you after the sale. In the future I will really need to think twice about buying from Gigaparts, even though it is a local company for me and only 60 miles away.

I'll take a guess, there might be expenses they have that they can't discount.

Maybe you should of shopped around, try HRO and other sources such as direct from the MFG. Unfortunately companies have policies.

I had to ship a part to my son who lives in another state. A small USPS flat rate box was $8 and change. I could understand your outrage at $20 or so but the little extra for split shipping seems reasonable to me. YMMV

Well they have always been good to me. It has been a very very long time since being "incensed" over being charged a modest amount over a special service that I requested. WOW seems to sum it up quite well.

I do recall them charging for shipping some specific items but their lower prices offset that cost making them cheaper overall. Didn't think that was something to complain about but opinions differ.I've found their service and prices to always be competitive or better than anywhere else and never had a problem with them (as opposed to some other retail ham stores).

I sell an item here and there on eBay. Shipping anything over 16 ounces is very expensive. Have you tried shipping anything lately?

I wish more companies would use US Postal Service flat rate boxes for shipping vs. UPS/Fedex.  MUCH cheaper.  I had several pounds of batteries shipped to me last week.  Vendor used USPS.  $6.50 for shipping.

I realize in some areas of the US,  USPS service is horrible.  In my rural area, the USPS folks deliver top notch service. UPS isn't too bad, but Fedex....they regularly mark my packages as "address does not exist" and send it back to the shipper OR just leave them at random homes miles away. I've been told Fedex drivers are contractors, not employees.  Not sure if this true, but it could explain some of the problems I've had.

You have waaaaay different rates than I do in massachoosetts. My cheapest priority anywhere is $7 something.

Personally sick of people complaining about usps rates in my business. People have zero clue what it really costs. Zero. They bitch and moan all day long about this to me. I don't set the rates. And you better believe if an order is split by request that person is paying the rate each time. How can any business owner eat the cost of this anymore on $10-50 orders. It just can't be done. Those that say it can don't pay the bills.....

Not pointing this at you N5AVF, just commenting on the rates and what I see in my business.

The actual cost of shipping an item is only part of the cost. Think of the steps involved:

1st - Someone processes payment. Generates the order/packing slip/address label.
2nd - Someone picks the item from warehouse.
3rd - Someone packs the order.
4th - Logs the order as shipped. Sends an email/updates website with shipping information.

In larger companies this could be 4-5 people, or in smaller companies 1 person and can take up to 30 mins of payroll. Lets not forget the packing materials, not to mention the "other" costs of running a business

So asking for an additional payment for a split shipment at "your" request is not totally out of line.

I've always been pleased with Gigaparts.   I did have a problem with a product I recently bought from them (see my review of the MFJ-929) but that wasn't their fault.  The extra shipping cost is an annoyance, I'm sure, but you could have avoided that by asking Gigaparts, when they asked you about split shipping, if it would cost extra for shipping it as a split order.  Others have put it well; there are many reasons for this.

I'd like to add that the USPS in my area is doing a very good job despite the dramatic reduction in their volume of mail over recent years.

(And Gigaparts, take a look at my MFJ-929 review; there's a problem with the specifications for that tuner, not your fault but you should be aware.  Thanks!)  --ken ac4rd

Flat rate works really well...... until they loose one.  The have been looking for a box shipped to me for 4 months and have never found it.   I have had lost fedex and ups that gets found rather quickly.
