Restructure the ARS
« on: March 13, 2020, 01:59:20 AM »

I propose changing the names of all Amateur Radio Operator license classes.
The top class would be called Group A and would allow the licensee to have a Group A call sign.
The Advanced license would become an active class again with the name Group B and would allow the licensee to have a Group B call sign.
The General class would be renamed Group C and would allow the licensee to have a Group C call sign.
The Technician class would be renamed Group D and would only be allowed to have a Group D call sign.
The Novice license would be renewable but no new Novice class licenses would be issued and Novice class operators would only be issued Group D call signs.

Since we have four call sign groups we should have four license classes.

Not a novel suggestion and hardly the place to do it.

I must be missing something. What’s a call sign group and how are they defined?

I propose changing the names of all Amateur Radio Operator license classes.

Why? What would be the point? A name is a name, nothing more.

Changing the names, and resurrecting the Advanced class license, would only mean work for the FCC. And you know that isn't going to happen.

"Since we have four call sign groups we should have four license classes."

And this assertion is based on what?

I'm not sure how I feel about dropping every group into a separate hole. But one thing I can surely agree with you upon, James you would definitely be in the A-hole.

I would like the FCC to stop reissuing old time W and K prefix calls to anyone than Extras. Maybe even KA as they go back 50-60 years.

Give the Techs old style CB type calls such as 1Wxxxx which might prompt them to upgrade. Plus it will keep them from using a "real" call where they dont belong.

Id also like to see some incentive to restore a CW requirement but havent figured that one out yet ;D

This wont happen either but it would be nice to restrict W and K 1x2 and 1 x 3 call signs to only those passing a 20 wpm Morse test.

Don't know why they like issuing K calls. My issued Tech call wasn't a KA as you mentioned but still a K call (KB1CSP).  I live in Connecticut so people thought Connecticut State Police :o.
I also had a K call for my CB license, KAHN1356.
Maybe I'll apply for an N call. Something like N0COD. :-X

Class A, B, C  and D would never fly, especially at the federal level. Would have to be AAAA, AAA, AA and A to be "proper". Don't laugh; high school sports classification in my state used to be AAA, AA, A, B, C and D when I played (1960s). Now they are AAAAAAA, AAAAAA, AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, and A.

I qualify for that. I still have the CSCI that says so.

If it were up to me:

1) Extras would be allowed any call from any callsign group .

2) Generals and Advanceds would be allowed any 2x2, 1x3, or 2x3 callsign.

3) Novices and Technicians would be allowed any 2x3 callsign.

4) Nobody would have to give up a callsign they already have.
