Hammarlund HC-10 7 pin adapter
« on: March 13, 2020, 12:57:54 PM »

I need the schematic for the 7 pin adapter to hook the SSB Adapter to my HQ-110C.  The manual that came with it  only shows the 9 in adapter.  Why don't hams keep the 7 and 9 pin adapters that originally came with the unity?  Sure would make it easier on later users.

Dave,

Looking at the manual for the HQ-110 (from BAMA), I see the last IF stage being the pentode section of a 6AZ8 - which is a 9 pin tube.

According to the manual for the HC-10 (from BAMA), the schematic of the adapter is very simple - but has to be customized for the receiver the HC-10 is used with.

From the instructions, the HQ-110 converter for the 6AZ8 looks like this:

Pin 1 (Pentode Plate) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 2 (Pentode Screen) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 3 (Pentode Cathode) - 140 to 240 uH RF choke connected between plug and socket. Center conductor of coax cable to HC-10 connected to Pin 3 of socket (not plug).
Pin 4 (Heater, ungrounded side) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 5 (Pentode Suppressor and Heater, grounded) - straight-through connection from plug to socket and outer conductor (shield) of coax cable to HC-10
Pin 6 (Pentode Grid) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 7 (Triode Cathode) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 8 (Triode Plate) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 9 (Triode Grid) - straight-through connection from plug to socket

If you want to connect the HC-10 to the 6BA6 IF tube, the 7 pin adapter looks like this:

Pin 1 (Grid)- straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 2 (Suppressor) - straight-through connection from plug to socket and outer conductor (shield) of coax cable to HC-10
Pin 3 (Heater) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 4 (Heater) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 5 (Plate) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 6 (Screen) - straight-through connection from plug to socket
Pin 7 (Cathode) - 140 to 240 uH RF choke connected between plug and socket. Center conductor of coax cable to HC-10 connected to Pin 7 of socket (not plug).

I was under the impression that the last IF in the HQ-110 was a 7 pin miniature tube.  I looked at the schematic and the 6AZ8 is a dual purpose tube with one section is the last IF.  Now I need to find a 9 pin miniature tube extender so an adapter
can be built.

Years ago I had my original HC-10 was hooked to the HQ-110.  This was my main receiver until 1965 when a Drake R4A.
Later I used another adapter to use the HC-10 to work with a HQ-120 circa 1938.

Thanks for the reminder.

Gotta love those manuals online!

You can do that, but there's another way....

Take a 9 pin socket and put short lengths of wire in the pins (determining the correct gauge is up to the reader). A bit of solder so they don't fall out.

Then mount another socket to the first one by means of two long 4-40 screws and appropropriate nuts.

Add jumpers, the RF choke and the cable, and there you are.

It may also work OK if you use the first IF stage instead of the second.

Hope it works out.
