Help with Yaesu FT-25 settings and repeater
« on: March 17, 2020, 12:55:58 PM »

First handheld, tried settings from the manual and online info. Would sincerely appreciate some assistance

I can listen clearly, but nobody can hear me.  Diamond antenna, clear line of sight to a hilltop repeater 10 miles away.  I am just not understanding the setting I guess.  Base radio works fine from here.

CTCSS  set at  TX 100    RX  91.5   ARS on   mode  Simplex  SHIFT  0.6

Repeater info:

147.0800   +0.6 MHz   100.0 / 91.5   Eugene, Coburg Ridge   Lane   W7CQZ   OPEN   ON-AIR

Does "nobody can hear me" mean that you can't open the repeater when you transmit?  Have you checked the power output setting on the HT?

I do not believe I am opening the repeater, I get no tone or response.  HT is set to "HI"  5wt

I haven't used an FT-25 but my next steps would be to check that the ARS function is applying the shift the way you need it (+).  If not, you need to turn ARS off and set the shift manually.   My next step would then be to recheck the CTCSS settings.

Edit:  Check your "mode" setting (Item 24) which is on page 42 of the online manual.  It appears you may have it set for simplex operation instead of repeater shift operation.

Appreciate your assistance here.   Turned off the ARS (although it claims to calculate this automatically?) Changed the shift to +   Checked the CTCSS   tx 91.5  rx 100  (tried it with the opposite CTCSS settings in case I was misunderstanding)

With this repeater I am not sure how to tell if I am "opening"   I do not think there is a beep, and I get no audible presence after transmission.

You say your base radio works fine. What do you hear when you kerchunk the repeater on your base radio. Have you looked at the settings on the base radio?

Tried that, the base does give me a report after transmission. I get no report on the HT.  Also the base shows 147.680 transmitting, 147.080 rx.  Do I need to specifically enter 147.680 on the HT?  The repeater is listed at 147.080

Is the tone on the ht the same as the base and are you sure that the offset on the ht is correct?

What do you hear on the base when you send on the ht?

It seems wrong to transmit on one, with the other on.  So I have been turning each off, as I try the other.  Is it safe to TX with another that close?

I see no way to change to tone on the HT.

I don't know that radio. Does it have a tone select feature? I wouldn't worry about TX from the HT with the base radio on.

KJ7MQB,

I was thumbing thru the FT-25R manual online and I share your frustration - it's not a model of clarity.  I suggest the following:

In the Set (Menu) Mode (as Yaesu calls it) on pp 40 -42 of the manual:

a.  Item 8 (CTCSS) set the TX CTCSS to the required input tone of the repeater.  Turn the RX tone setting off.  If RX tone is on, the HT will only receive if the incoming signal carries that tone.  You want it to hear everything on that repeater output freq, tone or not.

b.  Item 24 make sure it is set to repeater mode with the correct offset (not simplex mode).

c.  Item 29 turn SQL TYPE to off.

I see nothing in the book  ( I sent a link) for tone.    TX from the HT did nothing but a small change in the waterfall display on the base, did not look like it actually made a connection thru the repeater.
