Element 3 Licensing - Grandfather Status
« on: March 18, 2020, 12:22:03 PM »

Well I'm not sure if I'm placing this in the proper forum but here goes.

On April 10, 2004 I passed the General, written exam for Element 3.

This was when the 5WPM, code was still a requirement.  No 'New License Class Earned' was marked on the examination form.

Since the code requirement has been dropped from the element 3 requirement for General, do I still need to re-take the current General exam?

Is there any kind of grandfathering procedure in this case which would grant me General status from my current Tech?

I'd rather not have to re-take the element 3 exam but I will if I need to.

Thanks for any help you could provide.

In this particular circumstance, I doubt there is any grandfathering since you were never actually granted a license.  And any CSCE you might have been issued would be long expired.

According to my reading, you can only get a "grandfathered" upgrade to General class if you previously held a General class license or a pre-1987 Tech license.  Otherwise, the CSCE you received for the General written test was only good for 365 days.

Thank you K6CPO AND KR6NU.

I am just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Time to get cracking and study up on Element 3.

I am just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Time to get cracking and study up on Element 3.

I got relicensed in 2010 after being away from ham radio for nearly 50 years. Had a (13 wpm)
General license in 1958.

I too wondered about grandfathering. But I didn't spend much time trying to figure out
any possible angle.

Bottom line: the new Tech and General exams are exceedingly easy to pass. Most people with
any radio experience won't need to do any studying to pass (passing only requires 75% correct answers).

Good luck and welcome back into the fold.
