Hallicrafter's SX-62 for the bookshelf.  I used to drool over this receiver 65 years ago! I owned an S-85, that's why I drooled!

My first SW receiver at age 11 in 1971.  Regretted getting rid of it for decades and then acquired a total refurb recently.

After having used mine for several months now...I'm leaning towards the JRC NRD-515 in terms of both appearance and performance.

The receiver just exudes "solid". Though I really like my R-7s, they drift. A little too much for use as a digi-modes receiver.

There are two of them in use here; one is paired by a cable to an NSD-515 for true transceive operation while the second shares an antenna feed from the transmitter's RX Ant port with the first. It's also muted on TX and thus can be run in "separate" mode (w/o VFO or band control by the NSD-515).

I fronted each with a tuneable passive preselector (Yaesu FRT-7700). These help with image rejection.

Without a doubt, the Watkins-Johnson 8888 series of receivers.

An elegant, easy to use receiver -- like Mercedes SL versus the 'Vette.

With the optional preselector and fully accessorized, outstanding performance.

When W-J spec's a bandwidth, they MEAN 10 KHz.  All filters have VERY steep skirts.

The only drawback:  the phone jack REQUIRES 600 ohm phones or your audio is distorted
