ID Amp PSU Transformer(s)
« on: April 15, 2020, 12:00:21 PM »

A friend was building an amplifier, 800w output, solid state. It vanished in a move, so, fifteen years later he offered me the dual output power supply he'd built for it, it was me or the dump!

I'm trying to ID the two transformers, they're both the same.
Wiltec Inc
92361070-00B
MEC 1876

Likely in the 50V 30-40A class.

I can't find anything, they look pretty new, likely bought in 2000-2005 timeframe.

Thanks,

Pretty easy to figure out to a good approximation.  Measure open circuit secondary voltage.  If you can peek at the secondary winding wire and its gage, you can get a rough idea of current capacity.

Make up a resistor load bank based on several values of current draw, at the measured voltage.  Wattage on resistors should be as much as you can manage, but you will only be using the resistors for 2 seconds at a time.

Make a  plot of V vs. I to see how the curve reacts at increasing load.  When terminal voltage drops about 5% under load, that load current  is close to the rating of the transformer.

Of course, the easiest is to find manufacturer's data.  But if not possible,.....see above.
