ARRL study guide the best?
« on: April 23, 2020, 09:45:45 AM »

Going for the extra,, but not by memorizing answers.  I used the League book for a month, and I liked all the theory material.  Now I want to buy my own guide, but I wonder if there are any other guides that have even more explanations for each question?

Michael Burnette's "The Fast Track to Your Extra Class Radio License" covers theory quite well. A new edition for the 2020-2024 exam has just been released. Unlike some study guides that emphasize memorizing the answers, Burnette is a master teacher who has obviously studied pedagogy. He gives simplified analogies and stories to get the point across, and when possible, he introduces the following concept while explaining a previous principle. Highly recommended.

I do not think you can beat Hamtestonline.  It costs around $30.00 but it tracks your progress, teaches as you go and insures perfect results.

My humble opinion

It's refreshing to hear that a ham today wants to learn something and not just pass a test by wrote memory. Congrats to K7MPZ.

Thanks Gary, and K6LP, I just emailed Michael about his new guide.  I really want a paperback so I can continue to learn from it. Hopefully it explains those Smith Charts!

it is 2020 and the ARRL Study Guides are passe.  www.hamtestonline.com is the way to go.  No books needed, you will learn both the theory behind the exam questions and the correct answers more quickly, it will overteach you in your weak areas, and you can try it with a free trial subscription.

I am very surprised the ARRL hasn't moved to selling this kind of software to people because the efficacy is so good it is frightening, but i do appreciate the history of the ARRL Study Guides, they helped me pass my General and Advanced at the FCC Office in Chicago in 1977 -- back when the actual exam questions were not public.

790 hams all agree hamtestonline.com is worth 5 stars (try to find 790 hams who agree on anything and that should tell you something) ->

This may say something about success in passing the test.

It does not say much of anything about what people have learned about RF electronics. If you
look closely at what folks ask on the forums much will be revealed. The Extra-licensed ham who
asks how to wire a straight key for example.

hamtestonline.com doesnt teach you to merely memorize the answers, it teaches you the theory behind the questions in a very engaging way -- which is probably why it gets such rave eham reviews.  The ARRL Study guides dont provide more information than hamtestonline.com -- you would need to study the ARRL handbook and other textbooks to learn more about RF electronics.   Now there are some online sites that merely help you  memorize the answers -- i would not recommend those because learning the material is much more fun.  (even though i have forgotten more than i remember) ;)
