Let's hope the English version will follow soon.

Everyone is talking about shipments to distributors or similar.  Recall folks we need EMC and other compliance standards met first.  Then they can ship.

Watch for the approvals first.  Then we can talk about manufacturing and shipments to distributors.  There are huge fines for manufacturers that ship product internationally without having the agency approvals.

I figure Icom knows about the approval processes and won't sell in the US until that's done.  Maybe there isn't a problem there or it doesn't matter until the production is up and running closer to normal.

$1600?

At this price, no matter how good it is, it's too 'salty' for me.

That said, Icom will sell lots of them, and that is great.

I'm 'hoping' for an SDR replacement for the IC-718. I already have an IC-7300, but would like a cheaper SDR option from Icom.

Yes, I was expecting a much lower price tag too.  Considering I paid $600 LESS for an IC-7300, $1600 for a QRP rig with no ATU is asking too much for me.  That being said, we'll see if there's any "promotional deals" or something once it comes to the market officially that might make it somewhat more palatable.

Either way, I'd still rather have a KX3 - just can't afford one of those either.  Such is life.

Hams ask for 10watt versions of  HF radios but I think manufacturers have learned that there just isn't enough sales volume to have low prices at the same time.
This was the case with Shortwave Listener versions of ham radios.  People would look a the small differential in price and buy the ham radio version for shortwave listening use.

A valid point, but what about the FT-817/818 and the Elecrafts?

Also, not sure if it's still the case, but the Japanese manufacturers use to offer 10W versions of some models domestically. Why not offer those worldwide?

I believe the short answer is the 10 watt versions were hard to sell.   Just like pink Lionel trains.  Heard that while shopping at Amatos toy store in New Britain Connecticut, which has a fabulous selection of trains.  Eventually they were painted black and sold.

Would I buy a pink radio? Yes, for the right price. I bought a pink Garmin GPS in 2008 because the price was right. ;D

But seriously, there must be more to it. Perhaps size, current draw, etc. The FT-818 is not that much smaller than an FT891. Is this enough to make it a hard sell in QRP version?

Price does not appear to be a factor.

They sell a lot of FT817/818s because it has an attractive price point for the features it offers.  It is cheap enough that people will buy it despite issues with its receiver quality and relatively high current draw.  The amateur market is sufficiently small that the other "big name" manufacturer's won't go there and bring out a competing product.  I see the 705 as the radio for those who will pay for whatever it takes to avoid the issues of the 817/818.  An important concept in marketing is brand reputation.  Once you have an well known brand it is hard to change your reputation.  I see this is a reason why Woolworths could never compete against Walmart--people had fond memories of the personal attention you got in whether it was buying a button or a bicycle.  That biased any efforts to compete with a discount retailer.  But, Woolworths still sells shoes, or at least they did before the lockdown.  Woolworths still honors its pension obligations, so I say that while the name has changed, the company is still around.

I think I would rather have an Elecraft OR a 7300 for portable qrp or at home respectively.
I like the idea of the 705 but high current drain and no tuna is a big downside.
vhf/uhf is nice, high performance is nice, but Elecraft wins on the portable battery operation segment, low power draw, antenna tuners that can actually tune an antenna, small and light weight.

I wish Elecraft could come up with something like the MChf radios, all mode, built in battery and band scope, great fidelity, filters, color display, just add their great antenna tuner to a package like that.

At any price, I think I would have to go with a KX2 or KX3 if we are talking 10 watt radios for use in the field.
I can't see the 705 being as good for that.
