I wish Elecraft could come up with something like the MChf radios, all mode, built in battery and band scope, great fidelity, filters, color display, just add their great antenna tuner to a package like that.

The mcHF now has an internal autotuner available:

and the installation:

There have been several reports that the Wuhan Virus has delayed the production. Even if it is at $1600, it will fly off the shelf. Add the internal tuner and expect to pay much more. Most of the portable/off the grid users have tuned antennas. The specs have just been made public. FCC type acceptance will delay it 2 to 3 months. The combination of a Raspberry Pi and this radio will make a portable operators dream. I expect OH8STN to get one and be making videos before Christmas. I will be buying one used, waiting for the bloom to get off the rose. This will make a great rig for QRP Field Day. Expect software for logging/digital modes/computer control to be HUGE.

OH8STN is already very excited about getting an IC-705.
And being in Finland, he might get one before it's available in the US.

As for me, I think the 705 is a very sexy looking piece of gear.
And being a true SDR, it will be able to do some amazing things in the realm of receiver selectivity.
But I'm pretty well set with gear at this point that enables portable operation.
I don't need to drop another $1600 for a portable rig. I've already got an FT-857D, and an FT-817.
Both of my Yaesus have Collins Mechanical Filters in them for CW. The 857 has a 300Hz filter in it,
and the 817 has a 500Hz filter. And they both work very well with my solar/battery setup.

Now if one of my Yaesu rigs should happen to suffer a "tragic workplace accident", and end up
going to radio heaven, them maybe I'd consider a 705 as a replacement.

For reference, OH8STN also seems to really like the Xiegu G90. And although it's also an SDR and
can do all the really slick filtering, it costs 1/3 of the price of a 705. I just have this reluctance to
invest that kind of cash into a product directly from China, given China's historically poor to
non-existent customer service after the sale. Icom, on the other hand, will likely provide after-sale
support, and if history is any guide, that support will be infinitely superior to anything China has
done to date. I also understand that MFJ is a US distributor for Xiegu. Which might change the
equation a bit, since even MFJ's support is infinitely superior to anything China has ever done.
And that last statement should really tell just how bad any support has been from China.

That is the first time I have seen a price, I wonder if it comes with any extras, of course the, larger battery would be the next purchase.
On another note, I wasn't able to access the link "hamradio.com" as I got a message that my computers clock was wrong?
Its set to automatic update and manually  changing it did not work.

No that didn't work either, and just starting from a search on the web won't go thru.. I don't want to derail the thread.
I just found it on giga parts $1299.. the shape is very brick like when the batteries are not attached. I assume that the battery must snap into frame that screws onto the back of the radio,

If the link I posted does not work for you, better either change browsers or internet providers. I just clicked on it and it works just fine.
Yes, the battery snaps into a pocket that is on the back of the radio. Lots of YouTube videos posted on this radio and they are very informative. Get a cup of coffee, sit back and watch all of the videos. You will learn a lot, I did !

The recent G90 that I had worked amazingly well, unlike the early one I had.
No vhf though...no built in battery, great antenna tuner, 20 watts out if you need, very easy to use.
I suspect the 705 will also be easy to use like the 7300 and most Icom's.

Still, I really did like the G90.

Honestly, I just wish one of the Big 3 would come out with something that pretty much mimics the Xiegu G90.  Make it with that set of features, from a company I can trust, and I'll buy the thing in a heartbeat.

If Elecraft were to come out with a KX4, the price would be at the very least twice that of IC-705 but the performance would also be twice as good.
Art
That tends to happen to a price when everything that should be standard is an option.

I can't fault Elecraft, its a small American company and they deserve to make a living.
I think they might do well to make some cheaper radios that people that don't have a lot of money to spend could buy.
They used to have the K1 and the KX1, and even the basic K2 was a lot of radio for the price when it came out.
Now that the SDR method cuts parts count a lot (Icom 7300) they should be able to make a fun easy to use smaller 10 or 20 watt radio, something like the mcHF or G90 sort of thing.
Add an antenna tuna and power amp later as a kit like the K2.

What they have now is an uber expensive K4 and pocket radios for SOTA.

I am a big fan of Elecraft, being able to talk to the designers means a lot to me.

I have a K1, K2, K3, KX3, KPA500 and a P3. Unfortunately Elecraft have lost their way, the IC7300 stole the middle ground and their “vapourware” K4 is way behind schedule and significantly more expensive than the Yaesu FTDX101, which has become very popular here. Now we have the FTDX10 and for QRP enthusiasts the IC705. In the case of the Yaesu, Kenwood TS-890 and Icom IC7300, UK and European customers also get our 4m band included for no extra cost.

Sadly, I don’t see Elecraft doing well in the near future, covid and fires haven’t stopped the Japanese and they supply the “I want it now” buyer with next day delivery, or in the case of the FTDX10, 2 week delivery...

I hope Elecraft hangs in there and comes out with some new small cheaper radios.
I have built a lot of their stuff and they really make a fantastic kit.
