I have an old Sony 46" XBR LED TV that developed a display problem caused by bad contacts along the screen edges, an issue I learned was common to these TV's.  Of course, a repair would require replacement of the screen, at a cost equivalent to buying a new set!

Before I set this beautiful hulk out for the big green truck is there anything worthwhile that I should salvage from the internals that might be useful for home brewing?

Thanks,

Power supply, connectors, wire...... parts is parts.

Since its already" dead" , what do you have to louse by fixing it? Taking it apart is a learning experience.... i'd try cleaning the edges and see watt happens.

Strip it, put the main board on Ebay, and keep the led strips for lighting, and the speakers as well. You'll be surprised what is NOT in a TV anymore. Other than the screen you'll wonder why TV's cost so much...

Saw an interesting article on Nuts 'N Volts about a guy who built a light box out of the LED array in an old LED HDTV.  It was huge, so it made a pretty good shop light for his shack.  They're dangerously bright tho - so advise caution when testing/building/deploying.   I think the guy in the article used some sort of semi-translucent ceiling tile lexan to cut down the intensity of the strips.   He pulled most of the LED driver circuitry out of the HDTV too, if I remember correctly ...

The idea of scavenging old televisions takes me back to homebrewing stuff out of old CRT B/W TV's as a novice.  Memories ...

Hi,
Keep the Power Cord.    They come in handy for a variety of purposes including replacing worn out power cords, to using as power cord on a Homebrew project, to shoelaces for heavy boots!

At the least save any small hardware like screws, nuts, spacers.

I'm a bit perplexed by the question.
If you were the kind of person who builds and repairs electronics, wouldn't you already know the answer?
Since you had to ask, Id say you don't do much with electronics, so  "sell the boards on Ebay" is the better answer.
Generally the older the TV , the less demand for parts, though.  Also, most of the LED sets have more display panel issues rather than problems with the boards. But hey, it's a free listing-see what happens.

I second the last posters comment.
A very late tv may not have any switches, but if you go back in time a little  the switches are larger and good item to keep, and the power supply is a keeper.

It's unusual to ever find any TV parts for sale.

These days, no one actually "fixes" TV sets.  Unless they are "giant", they are throwaway items.

My local thrift store, has several TV sets for sale at give-away prices.  Doesn't make sense to fix one, unless it has great sentimental value.

I bet that the power supply board has probably half a dozen different voltage output points that are useful for various projects. Internal speakers worth saving?

But yes, the last $1.00 of entertainment value could be had by taking it apart.

I've scrapped a bunch of free tv junkers just to fatten my parts drawers. but also most all my benches are topped with some of the Plexi like sheets protecting most of the actual screens on these TV's nowadays. I love scrapping TV's if just for that stuff

I used to save the Fresnel lenses from projection TVs for a "homesteader" who used them to heat water!

As a dyed in the wool pack-rat, I wanted to share this...
A few years ago when Plasma and a few other BIG screens popped up on the scene, I was visiting my GF who worked at a 'Super' Wal-Mart. She knew I was a ham and took me into the back room which was FILLED with returned big screen TVs.
I asked her what would become of them. Since these were returned (for whatever reason), without a box, they were going into their LARGE trash compactor.
Wally World will take ANYTHING back!!!

I almost cried..... What a waste!

Myself and another ham friend sometimes go to the local land fill. We check the electronics dumpster to get parts.  We sometimes get lucky. Other times not so good. I have got power supplies from computers.Other things like CB radios microwave ovens. They also have a " free store" clothes, books, dishes . Found a weather radio there one time. Its hard to get parts these days with this Pandemic.
