We have these recycling people who put up signs all around the neighborhood and then they collect all the old electronics.
I don't know what they really do with the stuff, I've heard they won't let you look thru the stuff, or even buy something.
I be curious to see what they get. but in driving by it probably vars, DVD players, not any real vintage good stage but who knows?
Seems to be a small group that does this. How do they make money on this?
On the tv the only thing I save is the power supply as it has the largest parts and heat sinks.

Gold recycling is the reason they want these old TV etc. It is pretty nasty with the chemicals and processes these folks use, but in the end they come up with some useable amounts of gold from smashing up the chips and board edge connectors and dissolving them. There are plenty of you tube videos explaining this process.

I've seen those videos!

Looks like more expense/effort than it's worth to me, though.

The tuner can be converted to a reciever.
You will need some mixers a DDS, a arduino or something similar and some kind of demodulator circuit.
If you only want AM and FM an AM/FM reciever chip is the simplest option.
With SSB you can use a diode ring demodulator.

I think the most fun we had when at the land fill just looking around  we would look for the nearest big rock and throw it at the CRT and watch it blow up. So much crazy cheap fun.

Interesting the possibility to use the tuner as a receiver if you add a dds or a si570 or alike and a passive mixer. Does anyone have any good link that show how to do it?

Apart from eBaying separate boards, I would save the speakers, cables and at least the power supply board. It happened to me I repaired a PC monitor replacing an electrolytic capacitor with one of the defective power supply board of a TV. There are some high tension caps as well and some diodes that may be used. Transistors, fets or other active parts might be interesting but without a schematic it seems to me hard to understand which parts are.

It's probably a chip radio. You would need a hot air solder system to get off the board and attach it elsewhere.

The tuner is not separate, but integrated into the main board, so you have a lot bigger footprint than you need if you try to use it that way.

I haven't stripped an old TV for parts since the 60's. But back then there were some pretty interesting parts available. I never bothered with the click type tuners, but I recall that the old Dumonts, and several others, would have continuous tuners. In between channel 6 and 7 was the FM radio band and 2 Meters. With a little work, these old tuners could be brought down to 6 Meters. I still have a few of these tuners hanging around.

TV tuner scanner.

http://www.rfcandy.biz/communication/sprec.html

Those are all very old technology.
The tuners are an integral part of the main board on the flat screen sets.

No its the unit marked 3 in your link. Its only a diffrent size of the board.

Yes, but that is only a shield. It's not a removable module. The circuitry is part of the main board

My parents started with a Hallicrafters TV on the recommendation of a ham at work. What a POS and the store/service shop said to bring it back.

A 17" Dumont floor model replaced it and never a problem until they went color in the 70's with a Zenith. I enjoyed listening to the 2M hams which got me building a RX converter and a 2E26/PP 6AQ5 TX to join the fun.
