Will an attic antenna work? YES!
« on: May 15, 2020, 06:02:58 PM »

Got my IC-7300 this week, and I installed a fan dipole (20m 10m 6m) in the attic. First QSO was 599 on 10m CW from Puerto Rico. So I guess I'm off and running! Thanks and 73 to all who helped and encouraged me.

Congratulations! Nothing like the exhilaration of your first contact but knowing there are thousands more to come.

Enjoy!

Read Kurt Sterba's writings/books, he writes that even a grocery cart or garbage can, if metal, will radiate RF energy and you'll make contacts. Now, if you compare your antenna setup to some of the really "Big Guns" with their stacked beams at 100', well good luck....for a wire antenna, height is key, so raise your roof line a few feet in the air for better signal gain....or, sell where you live and buy a place in the country without HOA's and lotsa 100' tall trees. It's about laws of physics......73

My 10 meter beacon at 5 watts into a 10 meter dipole in the attic produced worldwide results.

I don't see how anyone could feel a sense of accomplishment putting up massive beams in an era of 100% reliable worldwide communications. But for every sailboat, there is a powerboat. And I would suppose that there are more gun hunters than bow hunters.

But that being said? Congratulations! And I'll bet everytime you make a contact with that Attic Antenna, it will be a thrill.

I wish you All the Best, and hope to work you someday! ;-)

What fan dipole did you use and how did you install it in your attic?  Any details would be helpful as I am evaluating HF options now and have an attic that would work.
