"The Veteran" SDR?
« on: May 26, 2020, 06:17:31 PM »

I see bare-bones kits for this Veteran SDR setup on Ebay. Searching the forum did not turn up any threads, which seems odd.. so whats the story behind this product?

It sounds like its limited to HF (3-30MHz) and it has transmit capability, around 10W PEP. Are they any good? Whats the cost to buy the BOM as listed? Thanks for any info.

Seems to be a 10W HF transceiver. Board is loaded with coils and relays, one group per band / tuning range I assume. Supposedly covers the whole range from 160m to 10m. The creator says the BOM us about $170 if ordered straight from digi-key.

Performance like the mcHF rig I suppose.
These radios can work really well if signal levels are not excessive, really nice to listen to.

The total cost of kit + BOM is just over $200 USD, but that could be lowered a fair bit based on careful / thrifty parts sourcing and what one might have on-hand. This includes custom front & rear panels that fit a standard rectangular chassis extrusion that can't be too costly, maybe $20?

I do enjoy building kits, so it's quite tempting.
