Keep in mind if you think you'll be putting it on the used market some time in the future, doing things like smearing putty inside the radio as a modification, or soldering/unsoldering *anything* inside a modern day radio will reduce the resale value.
I guess it pays ultimately to know who has owned what. I can understand this viewpoint, but at the same time, my goal - in the spirit of amateur radio - is to make it mine; to fix a bug or "scratch an itch" simply because I can. I honestly have no plans on selling my 7300, but if I did, I'd certainly make it clear that this or that mod has been done and why it was done.
Just as an aside: I make it a point to do clean, neat, professional work with everything, even if it's just for myself. I have a luthierie background - that pride in the end result is a bit of a necessity there. So if anyone buys anything from me, don't be afraid - I don't bite
