Frustrated looking for list of available call signs ...
« on: July 01, 2020, 07:36:50 AM »

My original call sign is a tongue twister which I am reminded of on a regular basis so I finally decided to apply for a vanity sign. As an extra class a 1x2 is available to me.  Even a non-tongue twister 2x2 would be an improvement.

My 1st step was to get a list of the available call signs but so far I have been unable to find a resource that will give me a simple list  of signs available.  My intent was to find a new call K0ab or Kn0ab where "a" is not a "z" as "zero zulu" in my current call frequently causes confusion..

can someone tell me where to look for a list of available calls?

thx to anyone taking the time to offer advice.

KN0AB appears to be available according to QRZ
Just dial some ideas into the search and if they don't come up as active, apply for it.

I agree with Tom W4KX, the AE7Q site is the place to go look:

http://www.ae7q.com/query/data/CallHistory.php?CALL=kn0ab

YES, the AE7Q site is a very good site in understanding the Vanity Callsign process.

Another site to check out is K8ZT's.

Choosing Your Ideal Vanity Call Sign by Anthony A. Luscre (K8ZT)
http://www.k8zt.com/vanity-callsign

Choosing a new callsign can be different for CW vs Phone operators.  There's a worksheet exercise for "Comparing You Callsign Choices" available online or to download.

Good Luck with your search.

W0UV is available today (7/2/2020). A pretty tasty call sign in my opinion.

the advice to use the ae7q.com site is sound! (it also well explains the application & assignment process)
some folks like to use their initials, WA0MS is available: http://ae7q.com/query/data/CallHistory.php?CALL=wa0ms

if you want to see which 0-district 1x2's are available (or will be soon) see:
http://ae7q.com/query/list/GenLicAvail.php?REGION=10

Try a 2x2 systematic call sign. You can request one from your ULS license manager page.

This site shows the last systematic calls issued, so you have an idea what you may get.
http://www.hamdata.com/fccinfo.html

I notice a lot people want a vanity call, yet have no idea why.
So they wind up getting their initials.  ::)

A systematic 2x2 will serve you well. If you don't like the first one, request another one.

As the OP said, some calls are difficult to say and be understood or too long or difficult in CW.
Ie; a call like WA5HS would be a non starter in CW !
I got luck lucky, my original call is simple and distinct.
