I'm new to relatively Ham radio, but don't you have to jump through serious hoops to get in MARS ? There was some AR service that you had to swear your life and allegiance to Homeland Security or some such nonsense. They had the forms there and everything... Once I heard that, I wanted nothing to do with it.

Also, I've noticed that the NTS seems to be waning as well. Here locally , they pass messages back and forth to friends and each other, but when it gets complicated, nobody wants to deal with it. I sent a message to a ham buddy in the Midwest on FD to help the club, but my buddy never got it.

Video killed the radio star and it seems the cell phone killed NTS  :o

What happens when the cell phone does not work?
There are still plenty of areas that do not have decent cell coverage,
and even more that do not have decent internet connections.

I was in MARS for 20 plus years. Don't care if it goes away.

This thread has outlived its usefulness.  Someone needs to kill it.

I'm one of the disenfranchised U.S. Navy MARS operators
with 24.5 years service, and still have bad feelings about
how it (NAVMARCORMARS) was defunded and disbanded.

I joined NavyMARS in the 70's and we had quite a lot of H&W traffic at that time.  I also ran phone patches after the traffic net and enjoied that
aspect too.  Now NAVMARCORMARS is dead.  I was offered a position in Army MARS but just let that go and enjoy the ham bands again.  I
still have the equipment to get on almost all of the MARS freqs.  The old Drake T4XB/R4B  will do all you need.  The L4B still will work there too.
Sure do miss the nets.

I miss the nets and handling traffic during actual events while serving with NAVMARCORMARS as well.
I was active from 2003 until the program sunsetted in Sept 2015.
I wanted to join Army MARS a few months back but was brushed off in an email.
Oh well. All good things do not last forever!

I was a soldier stationed in Korea 1974-5 and 1977-8.  To call home on a telephone was a trip to Seoul.  We survived on MARS.  My wife and my mother both knew how to say over after their sentences.  Those were good days.  Thank you MARS volunteers!

I was in Navy MARS years ago and loved passing messages to our troops. I'm just getting back into Ham and was sad to see it ended.
