Yep! Keep Lovin' your HOA Masters!

"He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."

George Orwell, 1984

But for the REST of Us?

Well, I Don't Think So.. Because HOMEY DON'T PLAY THAT!

I think it comes down to those who LIKE ultra-conformity and those who DON'T. It's not whether it's better, it what a person wants.
The OP is obviously happy as clam.

On the other hand, if I lived there, I would feel like I was living under the  Kim Jung UN regime.
Never liked bureaucrats trying to run my life... wasted too much time fighting capricious zoning rules and building inspectors who thought they were god. Yes, some even make up their own rules!
Again...no thanks...
Having lived where both exist ( restrictive building codes enforced by over-zealous building inspectors and now in a typical HOA), the former is far more inflexible. I’d venture to say those who haven’t are uninformed about either and are simply displaying their feigned superior ignorance about both.

Glad to hear that "Cynthia" isn't on your HOA board! ...or maybe she just hasn't arrived yet?
I'm sure HOA enforcers can be as unreasonable as some building inspectors.  You got lucky!

As a citizen of the USA, I feel that I have enough rules and regulations foisted upon me by default, so I'll pass on VOLUNTARILY subjecting myself to additional ones.
If I ever want my life regulated down to my hair cut style, I'll move to the DPRK.

Like I said, it all in what you prefer...
I'm happy that HOAs work for YOU. It's your American right to chose that lifestyle.

We had one annoying person on our Architectural Committee but he didn’t last long - they are easily removed as no one wants irrational rules enforcement, even us Americans who choose where we live :).

Actually, HOA rules are not much different than many municipal ones. Some do seem intent on perpetuating a myth that there is a difference. The only substantive difference is the enforcement entity and in an HOA, bad ones are more easily replaced than political appointed ones such as building inspectors. And we gain the benefit of market value protection and enhancement. Seems like a no-brained to everyone except hams intent on having big steel in their yard.

Big steel beats Cynthia every time in HR.

Otherwise why do so many people in HOA's whine about no or low performance antennas? Notice I didn't say all.

If you are happy where you are at...great! If not, then its up to you to fix the problem. Never seen a whine fix anything...but maybe some day there will be an app for that.

Pot - kettle.
actually, very few HOA residents are whining -  it should be obvious that far more incessant whining comes from those who don’t live in an HOA. Same characters also complain ironically about HOAs interfering in peoples’ lives oblivious to the fact that’s precisely what they are doing.

No, what is obvious is you have your own idea, and no other idea is acceptable to you. And you try to make it personal when someone disagrees with you. But I am sure these words are wasted on you and most other people also see you for what you are.

The difference between you and me is I am comfortable with what I have and feel no need to defend it. And while I prefer what I have, I am able to look at what happens around me absorbing the facts as presented by others in any situation. You on the other hand seem to feel the need to battle to the bitter end defending what you have. Seems to me rather than spending all that time defending it, live with it and be happy. Every person has a different idea of what makes them happy. But being defensive is not being happy.

If a ham living in an HOA community whines about antenna restrictions, it's because they either didn't read the CC&R's before they bought. Or didn't take them seriously and wonders why they received a denial for their antenna request, or violation after they already installed one. You gotta do your homework and take stock of your priorities. Stealth antenna options are always available if you do your research.

Truth!

However there must have been enough hams whining about what they signed up for to get the ARRL to launch a legislative campaign! I personally though it was a waste of their resources help people who just sign on the dotted line without reading the fine print - or think it doesn't apply to them.
Just sayin'

Perhaps the ARRL just had their own interests in mind by initiating legislative proposals. With the increasing proliferation of HOA/CC&R antenna restrictions, they saw the handwriting on the wall. If hams can't erect antennas in those communities, they'll lose interest in the hobby and have no reason to continue their membership. Especially trying to get new young blood into the hobby, as older hams in non-HOA environments are gradually dying off. A valiant effort, but so far, futile. Personally, based on past failures, I'm not too optimistic that anything will come to fruition on that front.

To many people, HOA/CC&R communities have a lot of advantages. To others, not so much. Personal choice. But if your priorities are such that you just gotta have that tower and beam, buy somewhere else.

More likely they never asked anyone and acted unilaterally. I know they never asked me or any other ARRL member living in my HOA or local radio clubs.

Attacking the messenger because you can’t contradict the message seems to be your go-to reflex. And practice has perfected your antics.

To the point, HOA residents aren’t complaining generally. Those who think they know better, like you, are... we never asked for help, neither want or need it and none of the 70+ hams in my HOA disagree. It’s a non-issue for most hams who knowingly bought homes willingly in HOAs.

I am not complaining. I have my great place. Yet you seem to think otherwise. Typical of someone who attacks then says I am the attacker when I respond. If you had any smarts, you would read and understand what is written before hitting reply. Oh wait...that's asking alot. Now thats an attack! LOL

Why does this topic exist if there are no people complaining? And why are there lengthy discussions if no problems exist? So you got 70 happy hams. Lets here their great stories of success. You seem to think they will back you up. Well lets hear from them. Otherwise you just whistlin dixie. Now that's also an attack. LOL

When you see a fire the general conclusion is something is burning. In this case I see people complaining, so the problem exists. Otherwise this would be an empty forum subject.

But as I said before, words are wasted on people like you. You have your finite opinion and all else be dmmmmmmmd. Oh yes, that's another attack. LOL

In my (humble) opinion, I believe this topic - 'Antenna Restrictions' - was originally intended to discuss alternative/stealth antenna ideas for those in communities with restrictions. It's not titled 'Complaining About Antenna Restrictions', but unfortunately folks (living in such communities, and 'outsiders' that don't live in one) have made it a platform to bitch and moan about them.

In reality, it's not a "problem" per se. It's a fact of life...HOA governed communities generally have CC&R antenna restrictions, period. It's only a self-inflicted *situation* for hams living in them, and if they're in distress about it, they have only themselves to blame. It's nobody else's problem, and lengthy discussions about it serve no purpose and are a waste of time and bandwidth. If the ARRL, for various reasons, thinks it's a  problem and wants to do something about it, that's their prerogative. Those not living in an HOA community shouldn't condemn HOA's and those that live in them. Why should they care? And those that do live in one should just get over it, stop complaining, and spend their time devising stealth antenna solutions.

Having an intelligent and respectful debate with a few characters here seems futile.  It’s only 2 or 3 people lacking the requisite maturity who feel  threatened by disagreement which diminishes whatever value forums such as this might provide. And making ad hominem attacks simply because of a fragile ego seems to be their go-to response

This topic, as K7jQ correctly notes, was intended to suggest antenna discussion, nothing more,  yet these same characters continue to abuse it to voice their personal agenda reflecting poorly on them. That behavior diminishes the value for all. It’s too bad they have nothing constructive to offer.
