Entry level portable receiver with CW-SSB filter?
« on: July 21, 2020, 06:31:41 AM »

Beside the XHDATA D-808, are there any entry-level radios with narrow band filters or is the XHDATA the only one? Thanks.

Jut about any SDR dongle for under $50 will take care of that.

Or are you looking for a stand alone receiver?

It depends upon what you mean by 'narrow band', the Digitech AR-1780 uses a variety of different wider and narrower filters for AM and SSB and mine works pretty well for such a small portable radio (It outperforms my Tecsun 660 on SSB although the Tecsum is better on AM short wave).

Standalone receiver, as my laptop has an almost dead battery and the SDR dongle drains the battery fast.

The Digitech was made for the Australian market. I couldn't find any sellers that ship to the UK and it doesn't seem to have the 500 hz audio filter that the XHDATA has.

The Tecsun PL-880 portable SW radio is a nice rig with DSP on the HF bands and several IF selectable bandwidths, good sound and quite sensitive.
I also own a Tecsun PL-390 that has the same multiple bandwidths and is reasonably inexpensive. Again quite sensitive for a smaller SW receiver.

The  Tecsun PL-880 costs almost 3x the XDATA.

Based on your requirements and limitations, and as far as I know, no other option is available. The XHDATA D-808 is a very nice portable for the price.

I have one, and many other portables to compare it to, so there is no 'guessianism' in my opinion.

Strange it hasn't already been mentioned, but you should  seriously look at this http://www.belrig.by/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=50 . It has dedicated band widths for cw, ssb, am and FM.

Lack of promotion/exposure, that's the problem. I remember seeing it way back when, but then nothing. There are others, but one never knows if it's a real product, design concept, or vaporware, until people get their hands on them and post 'ridiculous' reviews on eHam. ;)

Yes, it is a small production, but the product is real and it works. I own it since February and I recommend it. I also have the xhdata 808, which is good as well, but the Belka is special. We had never seen such a small standalone sdr and it's not even from China!

"frequency range 3.5 - 30 MHz."

What? No 160m band?

Maybe the software is hackable and extendable to MW-LW?

Actually the range is 1.5 MHz - 30 MHz. I am not quite sure why the producer states it starts at 3.5. I read somewhere the sensitivity is a bit reduced between 1.5 and 3.5.
