communication earbuds
« on: July 25, 2020, 07:05:26 PM »

I bought a pair of Betron earbuds and they seem to magnify the background noise, when I use them on 2 meter repeater there is a definite hum not heard from the radios speaker. I think the earbuds are meant to increase the base sound which is nice for audio but not so nice for communications. I am using this for portable operations, so size is important.
Any Suggestions??
Thanks

It's "bass" you don't want, whether you are portable or at home "base."

It's also not the fish.

You also don't want treble.

Cheaper, thus, can be better.

Old-fashioned, WWII "cans" are light, cheap and very non-hi-fi. Telex phones NOS are
about $15 on ebay.

The earbuds that came with my iphone sound terrible. Maybe they are good for coms use.

Other, simple, approaches are to clean up the audio in your rig or install a simple passive LC filter to limit low and high end audio response. A narrow IF bandwidth can also help.

I have severe hearing loss. I have tried quite a few brands of ear buds. Best bang for the buck, on the low end: Skull Candy. On the high end: Beats. I still pullout the Kenwood... headphones when on the air.

HTH...

I prefer JRC heaphones. Made for comms. The Kenwood comms phones may be more compact. But the right phones can make a big difference.

I use my RadioShack  stereo headphones that I purchased over 35 years ago.  I prefer them over the sound from my Heil Proset.

Agreed.  I use the 600 ohm ones.  A some of my "mil spec" solid-state rigs have really distorted audio with anything else than 600 ohm phones.

You DON'T want extremely good low frequency bass response if you're listening to FM and repeaters. The low frequency you hear is likely to be PL from the repeater getting through your receiver.

Many repeaters transmit PL so an end user can choose to filter out mixes or co-channeled repeaters. You can also use it to get rid of the squelch tail in your receiver.

I've never seen Telex Headsets NOS on eBay for $15. If you do please send me the link.
