My Icom 7300 is only “fair” listening for swl.
Report:

I bought an RSPduo but in my area I need an external preselector as well. It’s okay.
Lots of folks like the old Radio Shack dx-440.
I am thinking of buying an ALINCO dx-r8 swl receiver.
They are discontinued though...

Best of luck OM...

No mention of a budget, so I'll go easy. No mention of self-contained or PC tethered black box SDR, so I'll suggest both.

Self-contained portables:

Tecsun PL-660, XHDATA D-808

Black box SDRs:

AirSpy Discovery, SDRPlay RSP1A

Let's us know if money is not a problem, as there are some excellent radios out there.

The above suggestions should be good enough for general SWLing.

For SWLing, I'm assuming no transmit requirements, so the antenna's cost is not an issue.

Receiver suggestions:

Black box SDR only: Perseus, and Elad FDM-S2

Standalone+SDR combo: Elad FDM DUOr

The URL to see all 3 is:

Sounds like you want the antenna built-in, in this case, the portables mentioned earlier are some of your best options.

Both do, but since I don't monitor SSB with them, I cannot comment on how well they do it.

Most portables are at least usable for SSB voice, useless for digital decoding.

The 2010 was a very good radio at the time, and likely still competitive today.

It was released in 1985, and production ended in 2002. If you find a used one in good overall condition, it'll likely cost you a nice chunk of cash. Is it worth it for a potentially 35 year old electronic device? For a collector, perhaps. For a 'normal' user, not so sure, given that as good, more modern, and lower priced options are available.

I have a G5, actually an E5, the same radio under the Eton brand. The Tecsun PL-660 runs circles around the G5, IMHO.

Check also the Tecsun PL-880, and keep an eye out for the new Tecsun PL-990.

Tecsun is one of the very few companies still making reasonably good portables, but not for long. They already announced that the PL-990 will be their last.

It does usb and lsb very well. I don’t know anything about g5org6.  A Sony 2010 in good shape is abt $200-250ish. Thing to check is if any batteries did leaking damage.

This article from the Radioreference wiki has lots of links (always in blue) to sites with radio reviews of various levels.  Doing your homework now is the key to avoid disappointment later.

Get a Tecsun PL-880 (I have one and it is far superior to my Grundig Satellit 750) or even better get the latest PL-990.

I doubt you will need another SW radio!
