Back to the original question: Hamfests returning?  Even with vaccines being distributed, getting them to the majority of people is a half year away at best.  The real question is, given the above, SHOULD hamfests be returning?  NO!

Sorry, but you better get out your BIG umbrella.

Simple solution...don't go. But don't rain on other people's parade.

Well we know who to blame for the rain.

I attended the Tampa Bay Hamfest this past weekend (December 11 and 12). It was outdoors, and everyone wore masks. I think it went well. I don't see why outdoor hamfests couldn't be successful this spring and summer if the protocols are followed.

Outdoor, yes, provided vaccines are available to the general public! Where the problem lies is that there will always be the lunatic fringe who insist that they have the God given right to not vaccinate or wear masks.

There always was, is and always be a lunatic fringe that feel that they have the God given right to do whatever they damn well feel like without regard for the common good.

Half a year from now is mid-May. Lots of hamfests after Memorial Day.

I'm sure of one thing when it comes to the vaccine: Those that are involved are doing their very best to manufacture and distribute it in mass quantities, with all required protocols. You can bet that I'll get it just as soon as they let me.

And consider this:

Every "flu season", about half the US population gets a flu shot. That's well over 150 million flu shots delivered within a few months - and it is done without overwhelming the distribution systems. I don't know about other parts of the USA, but around here, you can get a flu shot at practically any drug store, plus most supermarkets, plus any doctor's office or "urgent/minute care" facility. Granted, the Pfizer vaccine isn't as simple to administer as a flu shot, but I think the capacity to deliver what is needed is there - they limiting factor being manufacture.

I got my flu shot at a CVS this year, took maybe 20 minutes. Easy peasy.

I don't live in fear - but I use a seatbelt, double check that the power/gas/water are turned OFF, read labels, use PPE, etc.

And I get vaccinated.

What a perfect weapon the Chi-Coms made. So good you do not even know you have been attacked. More to come.

Just got word Ham-Com in Dallas is closing after 41 years.  They cite COVID-19 restrictions, but also point to the increased costs of putting on the show.

Cost of venues goes up - Cost to vendors to participate goes up - ROI for vendors goes down - Vendors stop coming - Hams stop coming - FINI

I hope they do return.  I haven't been to a Hamfest since the mid 70's.

Sad but true. One less traffic jam in Plano in June weekend. Dayton is next.
