2020-09-01 VIDEO: This Radio is AMAZING! The Icom IC-705 Unboxing and First Thoughts!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AtOU79JLAc

"Today my Icom IC-705 arrived on my doorstep. I decided to get the camera out as quick as possible as I wanted to take the radio out, but not before unboxing to see what you get.

In Australia we have been privileged to be one of the first to receive the IC-705. In this video I give my first thoughts and unbox the radio. Please let me know in the comments what you think and if you will be purchasing the newest radio from Icom!"

Video run time is 9:13 minutes. Additional videos using the IC-705 will be forthcoming.

I don't find unboxing stuff all that interesting.  There are already a number of YouTube videos showing much more than taking the radio out of the box.

I get that you're excited.  Enjoy the new rig.

Yeah. Unboxing. Yawn.

No I won't be purchasing an IC-705 anytime soon.  The concept is very cool, so eventually I might buy one.
Granted, this radio appears to be heavily based on the IC-7300, which at this point is a tried and proven radio.
But I never buy version one dot uh-oh of anything. There are going to be firmware bugs in this radio.
All new releases have them. It's all but unavoidable. Give the early adopters time to find them, and Icom time to
fix them, then I'll consider getting one.

Interesting that the Icom America site shows an optional ATU coming at a later date.  That's was one issue many had with it.  I'm still undecided on getting one.

I would love one to replace my ageing FT-817 - but the current price is far too high for a 10W rig. Hopefully, it will drift down to a more reasonable level after a few years and I'll look again at it.

Compared to a Kx3 with a Px3  the price doesn't look so bad.  It would be interesting to see how it measures up on the sherwood engineering receiver tests, QST, etc.   Everyone posting YouTube videos seems to really like it so far.

Well, doesn't everyone really like a shiny new toy?

Like Martin, I've also got an FT-817 that I really like. I added a 500Hz CW filter, which makes it nice.
And I bought my FT-817 used, so it came with the TCXO in it already, which is extra nice, and the previous owner
had sent it back to Yaesu to have the updated final amplifier board put in (yes this is an old pre-ND model).
And the best part of my FT-817, is that it's already bought and paid for, and I only paid about 1/4 the price
of what the IC-705 is projected to cost. Which is a HUGE plus!

But for as nice as my FT-817 is, the IC-705 should run rings around it in the selectivity department.
Not even a Collins mechanical filter can slice up spectrum like a nice SDR can. You simply can't
implement a brick wall IF filter in the analog world for a price folks like us can afford. But you can do
that pretty effortlessly in the digital world. I got to play with a good SDR for a while on Field Day a
couple of years ago, on a crowded band with lots of CW signals that were tightly packed. My jaw
literally dropped when I got to experience the selectivity of that SDR under those conditions.

But the 705 has other features that feel a bit compelling, especially if you like to operate digital modes.

Once the early adopters work out the firmware glitches, I just may get a 705. But I'm in no hurry.
Besides, with everything shut down due to the Chinese virus, it'll allow me time to bolster the
radio fund while I wait.

Indeed, many took issue with the fact it doesn't have an autotuner.
That doesn't bother me. I pack a little MFJ-904 tuner when I go into the field now.
If I had a 705, I'd probably still do that.

Some folks fret about the battery life. That doesn't bother me either.
I usually bring a big enough external battery to run my FT-817 for a long time.
I don't see that having a 705 would change anything. The 18 Amp hour AGM battery
in a $50 jump starter from Harbor Freight will probably run a 705 all day long.
And for a lot less money than having an extra LiIon battery pack from Icom.

I like it, has a big screen and all, but I would probably use it on the low bands only.
Maybe 2 meter simplex with another antenna to carry.
Also I would like to have to purchase ($$$$)  an extra battery and a tuner.
Its too bad the "7300" is so heavy, I love to go hiking portable with it..

Yeah. Unboxing. Yawn.

There are much better things to do in life than watching such things.
An appropriate comment: "get a life." Or "get a better job."

I'd prefer to see how the unboxer recycles his boxes. If he does.

Only in California is recycling a box important.

To much larger degree, doesn't the buyer realize the radio is worth 10% more when you sell the unit and you have the box it came in.

Extra points for the sales brochure unfolded in pristine condition.

Don't get me wrong - it looks like a lovely radio and I'm sure that it will do well in the various lab based reviews - I would love one! The thing is that I'm not a dedicated QRP portable operator who gets his kicks sitting half way up a mountain with a small radio, a battery, a few feet of wire and some sandwiches. My 817 spends most of its time on the coffee table next to me so that I can monitor conditions, or it comes with me to our boat so that I can chat to a few locals or, very occasionally, it comes with me to a hotel room. The 817 is limited, it's an old design, but it is cheap enough to be an impulse purchase - I bought mine many years ago as a birthday present to myself... Speaking personally, and I suspect that the same will be true for many 817 owners, £1,300 is simply too much for a 10W rig no matter how nice it is. If my 817 finally gives up the ghost, I would probably look seriously at a Xiegu - at under £400, that is certainly within the scope of impulse purchase.

Martin,
That sounds like an awful lot of money.
Let's see, today it's $1.30 for £1, which would make that $1690. Wow!

I agree with you. That certainly isn't an impulse buy. Not for me anyway.
