I am kind of late to this discussion but I just wanted to add my $0.02 worth.

I don't own an IC-7300 but I recently acquired a lightly used Kenwood TS-590S from the estate of a friend that
became a silent key and was looking for a decent speaker. Unfortunately the reviews of the Kenwood SP-23, which
is designed to match the 590s are very poor. The speaker looks good but by all accounts does not sound good.
That lead me to looking for other options and I finally settled on the Phonema Miranda which I purchased from
DX Engineering. It is appropriately sized to "match" the IC-7300 and TS-590s and other similar sized rigs.

I have nothing but good things to say about the audio from this speaker, it sounds awesome on both CW and SSB and I would highly recommend it.

Hi,

I'm purchasing an IC-7300 and would like to get an external speaker with it. I see the Icom SP-38 is paired with it for $170. I know that's a lot to pay for a speaker, but I don't mind spending the money if the speaker is worth it.

I know there are other speakers available that have built-in DSP processing. Is there a well-regarded speaker that many people like to use with the IC-7300? I realize audio is very subjective, but I'm hoping there is a consensus around one or two models that work very well.

Thanks,
John

I believe W6MK is right. Every speaker sounds different to every ear. The best speaker is the one that sounds best to you. You must try one to see if you like it.

With that in mind, do not assume a transceiver manufacturer's matching speaker is going to provide the best audio from that transceiver. Some are good, some aren't. DX Engineering sells kits to improve audio performance for some of those expensive matching speakers.

Your best bet is to first try some inexpensive speakers to see what you like or don't. A good bet are speakers from home audio systems. The small speakers that come with home theater system are often very good. A long standing favorite is the old Minimus 7 home stereo system book shelf speaker. They are still at the top of ham want lists though they have not been manufactured for 20 years or so.

So, your favorite may not be the same as anyone else's. You can see that just in the number of different responses to your request. Just try a few and see what you like.

Also a good idea to match the speaker to the output power of the radio. Even mini speakers today can be rated for hundreds of watts. The IC-7300 does not have enough output to drive them.

You will like the 7300!
I found a motorola metal speaker I found  in an abandoned cab over 40 yrs ago, course I may have changed the 8 ohm speaker since then,  its the same speaker they might show in some 70's cop shows. :)

SO IT WAS YOU !!!!!

Nevar bin Sobar went in to the Quicky Mart to get a goat curd and a moocha.
When he returned to his cab, his speaker was gone !

He was so angry about the fares he was losing out on, his turbin exploded

Now wait a minute.  I use to drive a CAB by the way.

Anyway, so your asking about the best speaker for audio and my other thread is asking about a mic.

They go together but they don't do they?

If I have good audio and you have bad speaker you tell me I sound bad.

Then I go outside and beat my PR40 with a hammer.

This audio thing is a revolving door you will never get out of.

Good luck. That is a nice rig.

I highly recommend the Phonema Miranda speaker.

I was looking for a companion speaker for my TS-590S and the reviews of the matching Kenwood speaker were not flattering (its garbage). I did some research and ordered the Phonema speaker from DX Engineering.
It is properly sized for the IC-7300/TS-590. The sound is great on both SSB and CW.

P.S. The usual disclaimer, no connection to DX Engineering, just a happy customer.

Agree the comments about your sound/speaker preferences being unique to you.  Listen to many.  I needed something good but small due to limited bench space. My early report is that this little unit is growing on me.

More listening ahead with a pair/mixing board I had hanging around, which would reduce speakers dedicated to scanners.  Do not neglect trialing different locations for installation including listen test e.g. nested next to rig, below a shelf, at ear level vs not.

A good used metal or plastic case (my preference) Motorola mobile speaker makes a great communications quality audio speaker. If you want to change the sound a little, open the case and put a sock or some foam in it.
