KDKA Centennial Special Event
« on: October 02, 2020, 12:36:43 PM »

2020 is broadcast pioneer KDKA’s 100th anniversary. To celebrate this great milestone there will be a month-long special event operation put on by multiple Western PA clubs! Look for special callsigns K3A, K3D and K3K. Also, look for special callsign W8XK – KDKA’s callsign (then 8XK) before it was KDKA!

There will be portable operations from Saxonburg, PA, where it all started (*). Operators will be operating right next to one of the original tower piers!

There are great special QSL cards and a certificate if you work all four callsigns. QSL information will be posted on the respective callsign QRZ pages.

(*) KDKA, as 8ZZ, first broadcast from the Westinghouse facility in East Pittsburgh, PA, in November 1920.  The Saxonburg site was the first 'permanent' KDKA broadcast & shortwave location for decades afterwards.

WOW!  I remember listening to KDKA on an old Philco Cathedral radio that I resurrected from a trash pile.  I used my hard earned paper route money to buy the needed tubes.

Hard to believe it's "only" been 100 years since the first real broadcast station went on the air.

Radio has come a long way in 100 short years.

Ahhhh, the good old days of AM night listening on a 5-tube AM radio....... WCKY in Cincinnati.  XERF in Del Rio (actually across the border).  Good old WSM on a Saturday night for the 'Opry.  WWL in New Orleans.  WGN in Chicago.   The Boy Scouts sponsored an annual AM radio listening contest which I entered.  I followed up by getting my Novice, General, Advanced, and Extra class licenses in quick succession.  I'm almost 80 years old and I began at age 14.  Best hobby I have ever had.     dah dit dah

Hello All,

I am operating as K3A today for the KDKA 100 anniversary Special Event.
(Friday, November 6, 2020)

Look up the SE calls K3A, K3D, K3K and W8XK on QRZ.com
for lots of information on the history of, and old pictures of KDKA.
Lots of great reading to be found.

73 all and hope to CU on the air today.

I'll also be K3A on November 21, 26 (Thanksgiving) and November 30, 2020.
Please stop by.

A gentle reminder that W8XK QSL request for November 2020 Only -- the KDKA Centennial Special Event -- go to the Skyview Radio Society K3MJW.

Cards sent to me will eventually get forwarded, but it will be faster (and easier for the purposes of the certificate) if they go straight to Skyview.
